of the two I have, one definitely does. are you alluding to tagging port 5 on switch 2 which is connected to the dsl modem "102" and tagging the port on the modem to which it is connected to "102" ?

just wondering if that is the source of the problem or if it is a forwarding timing issue between the modem and the second router.

Oh right, I believe it should not matter as it is connected to an untagged port, both the router and the modem and if my understanding is correct the vlan tag is removed by the tplink switch when transmitting on an untagged port so this is what should be happening at the moment,

asus router < = untagged => <=switch => tagged <=switch => untagged <= modem

The tplink switches send out broadcast traffic as spotted by wire shark which I believe is used by the config utility and may be causing me an issue. Does anyone know how I would stop this on a particular port eg port 5 of the 5 port switch.

edit: loop detection was the source.

The answers seem confusing to me. If it were me there are 2 options.
1. Use a router at the front door only and extend your local network across to Location 2.
2. Use a router at the front door and at location 2 then use a VPN to between networks. I would only use this option if location 2 is far away and you cannot extend your switched network.
