Hi everyone.

I have an Asus RT-AC66U router with FW version 3.0.0.4.376_3861.

For some reason, my 2.4GHz speed is running slower then usual. I have a 100 down and 10 up plan with my ISP. I have been in contact with their support people and tested my connection from the modem. All ran well there and I was able to hit the 100 down and 10 up speeds.

When I test my connection through the Asus router at 2.4GHz, I'm only getting around 50-60 down and 10 up. I also notice that the signal strength bar on the Windows bottom left of the start menu loses a bar. (I'm right by the router?)

I've also tested my speeds on my iPad and have the same results.

Please note that on the 5GHz on either my laptop or iPad, I can consistently hit 120+ down and 10 up.

Any idea what could be causing this issue? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Please note that I used Speedtest to test my speeds and my ISP's speedtest site as well.

Cheers!

Recommend to upgrade to the latest version, but first;

Remove all USB devices from your router and reboot it.

Wait five minutes after rebooting and do the firmware upgrade. Even after a soft reboot, I would pull the power plug and wait a minute or two before powering up the router again.

Now, reset the router to factory defaults and again; even after a soft reboot; pull the power plug (hard reboot).

Configure the router manually and minimally to connect to your ISP and secure the router. Do not use a saved .cfg file to restore your settings (otherwise, resetting to factory defaults was for naught).

Do not use the old ssid's. Create new ones (or, alternately, 'forget' and re-associate each device). I recommend new ssid's to ensure that no old settings are carried forward.

Make sure the wireless mode is on Auto (and not on 'n' only or some such thing). And choose a specific channel too. You may want to spend some time testing which channel is the best on each band (do this methodically, one channel at a time with a reboot of the router and the test computer and at various typical locations used).

I would suggest that you ignore programs like inssider and simply test each channel instead. What inssider shows and what really affects your wireless network are different things.

A further reboot or two at this point is also recommended for the best performance of the router.

Thanks L&LD.

When I reset the router this morning, it had updated to the latest FW. Is this not the latest FW version?

I will follow your instructions and will report back.

Cheers!

Without giving the specific version, I cannot tell. But if you mean the version that is in your first post, that is very old.

Click the above link to see the latest version available (3.0.0.4.378.6065 final and Beta Version 3.0.0.4.378.6117).

Moral? Don't trust the auto update feature to ever work properly. :)

Thanks L&LD.

Update...

Thanks L&LD. That did the trick!

I followed your instructions and my 2.4GHz speeds are where they should be.

I'm still going to play around with the channels to see if I can squeeze a bit more out of it.

Cheers!
