Hi there, I just bought a RT N66U

I have 150/10 internet, and it seems to "throttle" my internet at about 120mb down max. When I plug in directly to the modem I am able to hit advertised speeds, if not higher.

QoS is disabled.

I am running the Merlin firmware the latest build.

Anyone know what's up?

Is it DHCP or PPPoE?

If you look at the Tools -> Sysinfo page, does it report that HW acceleration is enabled?

HW Acceleration: Enabled

Pretty sure im using dhcp? I thought PPPoE is for DSL/VDSL

Ok, just checking. Firmwares based on the old SDK5 don't have HW acceleration for PPPoE.

The only thing I can think of would be to turn off your modem for 10 mins to force the connection with your ISP to fully reset itself, then turn it back on. See if that helps.

Speeds are fixed now, after turning it off for 10 minutes. Thanks a lot!

After doing some more testing, i have a switch in the basement that connects to a pc, and when I do a speedtest on that pc it can only get 20-23mbps. With my old router it was able to get 85-90 mbps (because the switch was 10/100) So I ordered a new switch that is 10/100/1000, and it still is only able to get 20-23mbps on speedtest.

It's definitely the router doing it because I went straight from the router>to that pc and it was able to get full speeds (150mbps) so the router is throttling the switch some how, and I have absolutely no idea what setting in the router would be doing that.

QoS / Parental Controls are both off. Are there any other things that would throttle the connection through a switch?

Follow the basic troubleshooting steps in link below. They apply to both wired and wireless problems.

Just tried your steps, but still seems to be capped at 20mbps down, through the switch.

I tried turning on QoS and strangely its going about 40mbps now...? Turned QoS back off and it goes back to 20mbps.

Does Asus n66u have a manage/unmanaged option?

I don't have quite as fast service as OP, I have a 50Mb down / 8-10Mb up plan, and through my RT-N66 and then over WiFi, I can actually test at those speeds to close geographic servers (that aren't owned by my ISP) and hit those #s from my phone if I'm on 5ghz wifi.

My router setup is pretty simple, still running 3.0.0.4.374.32 (Merlin build), and don't have QOS, no IP based traffic monitoring, nor any extra scripts, no download server, upnp server, etc running.

from iPhone 5

and my Arris Docsis 3.0 cable modem channel info if it makes a difference

Yeah, my wireless speeds are perfect. Plugged straight into router are perfect too.

The problem is that when the router> switch > pc it becomes capped at 20~25mbps (with qos off) 40-45mbps (with qos on) lol.

ok. sounds like you are making progress with your troubleshooting. So just continue to isolate. You need to rule out the ethernet cable, the switch, and the computer.

If you try a different computer and still have problems, then you might look at the ethernet cable, since you've already tried two switches.

So what happens when you connect a different computer to the switch?

Here I am connected to my router via 5ghz, which is Cat5e hardwired to a D-Link gigabit 24 port switch, VNCing via my MacBook into a pretty old HP tower w/ a gigabit NIC running Win8, achieving same speeds.

How long have you had it connected? Can't it take a switch a day to learn new MACs? Maybe unplug the switch for awhile, then plug it back in and test in 24hrs. I also might be talking completely out of my butt with that last "suggestion." ;)

Well I just changed the ports ethernet cable to the 4th port instead of the 2nd and it's now getting full speed..... How strange. Anyways atleast everything is running at full speed now. I just tried the 2nd port on a different computer and it seems to be running fine... I have no idea what happened but yea. Thanks for the help everyone. Appreciate it a lot.

Hi,

Do you use CAT5e (at least) or CAT6 cables on all connections (incl. WAN)?
The router is very sensitive on this - CAT5 (no-e) will cause problems like this.

With kind regards
Joe

Yeah i do have 3 cat 5, and the rest cat 5e. I'll have to put cat 5e going through the whole house now. :'( oh well.

as has been said by the other posters these routers do not seem to do well with cat5 cables, they just dont cut the muistard with the n66u, you need at least cat5e or better for the router to perform correctly
