Ok guys i'm finally up. Two issues i found. One my piavpn opt1 interace was assigned to some physical mac. I will look into what that was but it deleted the vpn interface and recreated it poiting to opt1 with no mac there. It's virtual interface. pia interface is now up with ip address.

Second after changes pfsense needs to be rebooted. Restarting vpn service didn't do it for me.

There is still one problem. I'm connecting to NJ which is east coast and my config is midwest. On router i was able to connect to server in neighboring town.
Not sure why i'm going all the way to NJ when my config is midwest config.
Dns is also NOT leaking. I backed up config so i don't have to do this all over again on swap.

I'm now with pethetic 12Mbps on P3 1Ghz box hahah.....i may order that core2 3Ghz now

Ok i'm back on midwest server. I did same custom config as in router with adding comp-lzo and tls-client into custom config even tho it don't need to be there apperantely server end is sensitive to that. Midwest server bumped my speed a bit but still pethetic but good for pentium 3 1Ghz lol

System...quick question. Hance 1Ghz P3 can do 21Mbps wouldn't my assumption be that 3ghz core 2 would only be able to do 60Mbps max?
I mean P3 is lame and still pulling 21 without any special instructions so i mean it appears to me it's all about Ghz CPU clock only unless one has that AES special instructions. Just wanted to check with you on your opinion as 60Mbps would be lame for Core 2 3Ghz. It looks as if without those AES special instructions one would need 4Ghz pc to do 80Mpbs and thats still not 90Mbps. Thoughts as on my analogy?
 
An P3 @ 1GHz is an order of magnitude slower than an 3GHz core 2 duo.

Clock speed is not an indication of performance, particularly when comparing between different generations of platforms.

So you think i may pull 80Mpbs on Core 2 3Ghz pc. It's 64bit arch and has those SSE3 instructions but no AES obviously. AES comes on some i5 but that pc would run me 300-500$

I wouldn't want to guess. :)

I just know that an P3 1GHz 'equivalent' processor is what $25 calculators are running today.

haha that's funny but you must admit AC-RT66u does what P3 is doing so it's sad that they won't put dual core processor with AES instructions into router.
That would be first thing should be done. WAIT....maybe i'll start a company that does that, first in world...NO one is doing it hahahah

I'll go into Shark Tank and Cubes with throw his money onto it hahahah

No one is doing it yet, but if I were to guess? QNAP or Synology would be the best bet of getting that kind of hardware (Intel) with the os to actually take advantage of it (QTS or DSM).

Man openvpn been around for a while and they haven't even addressed this while asus is pushing for gamers marketing.
 
BTW guys that third interface mac is P3 Dell build in nic card and pfsense automatically detected during initial console setup and assigned it to opt1 which then i assigned piavpn. So if pfsense wouldn't auto assign would be no issue. If i paid attention more and didn't click too fast i would catch it but anyway, water under the bridge now. Pfsense did what it was suppose to and i was in auto pilot mode from previous setups, clicking too fast.

I'll give a try on ESX over the weekend and with ESX setup is different then with vmware workstation. My vm wkst still will host ESX so i'll see but i needed at least to know i'm not being blocked or something else that is weird.

Why would they address this at the price points that routers were even a few years ago? The solutions have always been there (throw money at the problem), just that those solutions wouldn't be what consumers would be likely to look at (without some guidance).

Now, with $500 routers being the new normal (at least at the high end), further options can be explored as the market has already proven to be accepting of the required price point.

If I could spend $1000 today on an QNAP and QTS based tri radio router with acceptable enough performance (doesn't even have to be the best, today), I would. Why? Because that may very well be my last router ever (assuming QTS keeps being updated for it).

That is also what the manufacturers don't want though. To offer a solution that will effectively be their exist from the respective industry they're trying to dominate.

If you do go ahead and develop a competitive solution to anything we have available now, I'll be a customer soon. ;)
 
Understood brother but my $$$ says i should not be needing to spend $1000 to get 85mbps on vpn. I mean for that purspuse it's overkill yet there is no real solution maybe besides pfsense and virtualization or $50 refurbished pc which is all i'm exploring at this time. I will give it a try over the weekend on ESX and see how that goes as i only tried pfsense on vmware workstation and that fails for me. Bridging Natting all different configuration setup fail for me. Maybe i'll have more luck on ESX. If that fails i'm buying 3Ghz physical box. It's cheap enough even i get tired of it it's not big loss. Who says down the road i will like pfsense, maybe it will be too much for me to maintain in knowledge wise. Routers are so freaking simple to execute on. All this frustration with pfsense for average joe is simply not worth it, me being avr joe too. lol. But i'm ambitious bug so i try and try and try and fail and try.

VPN performance is only one aspect of that imaginary $1000 router I envision. And if your ISP offers higher speeds (and over time, they probably will), then the one time cost is negligible in the end.

What I want is the hardware to not be the limiting factor (for the life of the unit), the software can always be upgraded (as it is already).

In my experience, you usually get what you pay for. A $50 refurbished pc will always give you less than you expect.

Blade thanks for offering to help. I got it up. Pfsense assigned opt1 to my dell integrated card during auto configuration during initial setup. Thanks again tho. I couldn't get pfsense to work with vmware so i failed with virtualization solution. I will try ESX over the weekend but will fail probably too. lol

FYI on pfsense forum no replay to my thread. Great support there wow.

That 65W E8400 has less performance than an 4.5W M-5Y10.

What is the cost of that processor? I would be looking for a newer platform.

I understand and i agree 100%. For me avr joe i have no need yet for all this and for whopping $1000. You know what i mean.
Do i really need to get 85Mbps on vpn, probably not, 60mbps would do it but why shouldn't i if my comcast isp is 90/12. It bothers me i'm limited by some cpu in router and $1000 doesn't justify the upgrade just to get 20Mbps you know?

As far as hardware you know that every year or few new things come out and evolution takes place (newton law in computing) so the same hardware just like P3 is now will be equivalent to that $25 calculator. Same analogy ;)

Whole pc is $55 so that's why. Again i could buy new intel xenon with AES instructions but then mobo cost and psu, memory, hd. It will run me a $1000 for mear 20mbps increase in vpn speed. I'm trying to justify cost to gain ratio here.

The way i see i have two options making virtualization work (which i'm failing here so far. Will try ESX over weekend) or $100 or less for refurb pc box like this one.
Those boxes that pfsense sells are $3o0 and i bet they will fail with CPU on vpn as they are atom 1.6 single core and they didn't take openvpn into account so even those boxes suck.

You will get no reply to noob issues. It bothered me when I joined the pfSense forum, but now I prefer this lack of response. People (including me) need to learn to RTFM.
