(Static IP) WAN issue, little to no throughput

Hello everyone,

I've been trying to get my new router to work for almost a week now. Being out of options, I thought I might bother you for some help.

The router came with firmware 3.0.0.4.260.
My WAN is set up as Static IP with 2 ISP-provided DNS servers entered manually. I also provide a MAC address for the WAN interface. During the quick set up steps, I also configured the wireless with different SSIDs and WPA2-Personal authentication.
Setup ended with one wired desktop, one wireless laptop and one smartphone connected in the LAN.

Internet access is almost nonexistent at this point. I mean, I see a few KB of traffic in a couple of spikes across 1-3 minutes.

Following are a few network tests that I made:

Have you also entered proper gateway information for your WAN connection?
Have you tried differnet DNS servers?
 
I have tried with the 2 GWs listed in my test results and also with Google's DNS servers in addition to the 3 DNS servers of my ISP.

I did read something around here, which I also tried. I set my router, 192.168.1.1 as DNS server in the LAN - DHCP server page. This results in getting some traffic through sometimes, though pages never finish loading.
 
And if you connect a computer directly to your modem, everything works fine, correct?
 
No. If I reset to original settings and go through the set up again, from my PC or laptop exclusively, the same issue manifests.

EDIT:
I have tried a lot of different configuration options. I am reluctant to post them so as to not focus anyone on a potential wrong issue. I am however, open to any ideas even if it means retesting something on my side.
And also, many thanks for replying on a late Sunday :)

If you took the router out of the loop, the problem is with your ISP connection. Contact their tech support.
 
I'm sorry, I don't follow. My ISP provides a Cat5e. I can use that either directly or put a router in between.
I only have problems when I'm using the router.
It works perfectly when using the link directly or through a switch. I was previously using a D-Link DIR-600 and had no issues.
 
When I said "modem" I mean broadband modem, not router.

Have you tried adjusting MTU (if the static WAN settings allow you to)?

Hi Iotzan,

I am running static WAN configuration (for security reasons) for years and this is by sure not the reason for the issues you have. :rolleyes:

First of all I would update to the latest firmware from Asus directly, or - even better from Merlin!
You are two releases behind the actual version... :eek:

Especially the latest version .354 improved the LAN/WLAN performance and stability due to new hardware drivers in the router!

Then I would suggest to reset the router to factory defaults and start fresh configuring it.
Do it step by step (just WAN first - checking), then WLAN (checking), etc.

Hi,

You can change the MTU/MRU in the web interface only if you run a PPPoE WAN configuration!

From router telnet session you could do
ifconfig eth0 mtu xxxx
