Strange RT-AC-5300 questions :)

The main reason I am replacing my AirPort Extreme is that I am giving it to my daughter who is moving out next month

Buy a cheap AC1200/AC1900 AP for now - let's see what Apple ships - they've overdue...

TPLink Archer series is a good/cheap choice for the moment...

If you have your heart set on buying Asus - RT-AC68U is more than enough for your needs, and perhaps the RT-AC3100 - don't need more than that...

I thought of waiting to see what Apple rolls out but I hate flying blind with no visibility or control of my network at all. I'm caught between two worlds, I'm an Apple guy but I'm also an IT guy. Yes I do realize the minute I buy one, Apple is going to release some really cool Airport Extreme with a bunch of HomeKit and Siri based features.

I'll check out those other models that you mentioned but to be honest I'm looking for something with the new generation chipset. I know this doesn't guarantee me any kind of future proofing but at least it will perform its current feature set and maybe handle a few additional tricks without any issues. For as long as I seem to keep my a routers, I don't mind spending a little extra money for a little bit more performance and all the bells and whistles.

I'm really looking forward to joining you all in the WRT world!

Well reading online and watching YouTube video's a fair number of people complained about heat causing it to lock up, a daily reboot was common.

I'm watching Amazon's ULTRA HD TV via FireTV and AC5300, no any issue at all, no reboots neccessary!

My 5300 is the best router I have ever purchased and I am not having any 'bugs'

I have had 5300 for several months after a 68U for several years and it is bug free and has much better coverage in my large home. I do not need a Repeater as I did with the 68U, I surely assumed I would. I am extremely satisfied.

this i will question as both are at max erip so unless your 68u was faulty for some reason there wont be any substantial extra coverage from the 68u to the 5300

the benefit of the 5300 is the extra throughput it will afford once you have adapters capable of its 2156M

so i suspect you ether had a lemon or a faulty antenna/s on the 68u

i will point you to some testing i did recently

which i will add the 5300 when i get it but as you can see there is no great increase in coverage between 1900ac , 2530ac or 3200ac class and i suspect there wont be that big an increase in the 5300 ac class if any

Better SNR can also help. It's not just related to the actual output power.

I have installed my AC-5300 and I have one complaint. I have missed many shows due to the fact that I am staring at the bandwidth monitor. I just love being able to see what is happening on my network!

As far as coverage goes, the AC-5300 covers my entire 2,000 sqft house, my garage and my back patio.

Very happy with this purchase.

"Noise" is both external (man-made, thunderstorms, sunspots, etc) and internal (thermal noise, semiconductor noises of various types, etc).
