I'm analysing these similar 2-bay NAS boxes at the moment as my last one failed, causing loss of my JBOD drive.

Personally, I'm looking to use it for general storage in JBOD but also bittorrent use in a stable environment. Which of the DS209, DS210j or TS210 would be more suitable? I know all offer BT solutions, however the DS210j has 128MB RAM, and I've heard that particularly limits BT use. Does the RAM have that much of an impact on BT capability and general copying/streaming performance? I know the CPU has more influence on speed, however someone said each BT file takes up 30-40MB when in use, thus 128MB RAM may not be able to handle 3+ torrents. I'm not so interested in using hot-swappable features, and music streaming at this point.

Reliability and support is also something I'd be interested to know between QNAP and Synology as my last drive manufacturer support was non-existent. The DS series looks to use more power when in use, however the same when in standby. Which ones are would be quieter?

The TS210 and DS210j are the same price in AUS, but the 209 is $100 more. I have a 808GB WD Green drive to go into it already. I have read all the business about WD Green drives an am a little bit worried about the Intellipark issue. May result in having to buy Samsung F2/F3's...

Thanks for your help in advance

Hi guys,

I'm wondering also whether to buy Qnap TS-210 or Synology DS-210j. They are the same price.
It's for a home office and I need to buy it as soon as possible. Any advice?

Thanks!

Can't comment on BitTorrent capability because I don't use it.
Otherwise the two "210" products are very similar in features and performance.

DS209 costs more because of higher performance.

Hi Hachoo,

I'm in a very similar boat as you and have also noticed the two devices you have mentioned (QNAP/Synology).

Have you purchased anything yet? If so, how are you finding it?

I'm looking to offload my overpowered desktop (which I barely use) and get a laptop with a NAS hidden away. The NAS needs to be able to store and server content over my wireless N network (NAS will be directly connected to the wireless router, with the laptop and appletv over wireless). It also needs a decent bittorrent client so I can turn the laptop off when not in use.

My advice is check each company forum if customer service is a concern. I can only speak from a QNAP perspective so take it for what it is worth; our TS-509 failed 2 weeks ago and getting it repaired has been a truly frustrating experience. Email support only and 1 response to 5 emails in that time. Basically we have no idea what caused the failure or when the unit will be returned.

As I mentioned, if you check the QNAP forum you should quickly see many post go unanswered, particularly when it involves a hardware failure issue. In other words, zero customer service.
