I have one Asus ac87u router .My router stop working.
The Lan Port 1 is not working anymore, I plug the Ethernet Cable to Port 1,the blue led didn't light up. But I try on Port 2 and 3 and 4 , the blue led light up. Is it Firmware problem or hardware problem ?
I have tried recovery mode/rescue mode, try to install the firmware again but its not working.
I have tried reset not working.
Using latest merlin.
I have buy it last year.

Sorry forgot to tell,my ac87 router will not start.just the power lamp is blue,i can not get into the routers menu, just lan 2.3.4 is working,192.168.1.1 not working, and i can not get the router in rescue mode, after 5,10 minutes all led is blue and red,and gone again and just the power lamp is blue

Try this:

1. Power OFF the router
2. Press WPS button without releasing it.
3. Power ON the router.
4. Keep 2. until you see the POWER LED blinking too fast.
5. Release the button.
6. Wait for router to reboot.

Anyway you will have to RMA it, even if you are able to recover from the current state, LAN1 and Quantenna radio are dead.

If possible ask for a refund / replacement, unless you want to repeat the experience again at anytime, unfortunatelly it's a chronic problem on that model.

Good luck. :)

Thanks for the help,i will call the shop tomorrow and get replacement,i have buy it last year.
its almost one year.think i have two tree years warranty.

You are welcome, follow my advice and force them to change for another model / refund, you can simply point out for the threads on the Internet about this well known isssue, I had 3x failed RT-AC87Us in less than 2 years and i know ALOT people on the same situation, you can have the bad luck of failing again after the warranty period and that's not something very pleasant to happen.

I had the almost the same issue, and used many hours finding a solution. at first i thought my router was bricked because the blue lamp was blinkingm, but found out that it was because it was in recovery mode. after that i tried the restore utility from asus, that worked well, the issue here was that i by mistake restored a wrong firmware and the lan port 1 stopped working so i couldnt use the tool anymore. i then tried to restore from SSH and from web portal that still worked from wifi connection, but it didnt allow me anymore to flash a AC87U firmware. so after a long time i tried a different port on the router, and could see it connected, then from the webpage 192.168.1.1 a lite version of firmware page comes up, and this one allows to flash other firmwares, after successful flash and a wait of 10 min, everything worked, includning the lan port 1

LAN port 1 cannot be used while in recovery mode, as it's on the Realtek switch which does not get initialized by the bootloader.

The same issue i had with Lan port 1 not working, but was able to put into recovery mode and the user lan port 2, and go to http://192.168.1.1 and update the firmware from there instead of the tool

The 87U is a special breed (and maybe other Asus routers too).
From here: https://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/asus/rt-ac87u
This hardware configuration has a side effect: LAN1 port isn't available unless Quantenna SoC is up and running.
In order to boot Quantenna SoC we have to provide a TFTP server with at least the U-Boot and Firmware files for the Quantenna.
Whenever our TFTP server is running on the BCM4709 with the required files we can set GPIO8 to output and high value in order to boot the Quantenna SoC.
Then the Quantenna SoC will boot from a minimal bootloader stored in its SPI flash and it will request the full U-Boot through TFTP.
Once U-Boot is running it will request the full firmware through TFTP.

I hade the same problem.port1,I send it back to store, and the the store contacted me and said the router was ruined so i got a new router, now it has been working since then.

though the lan port 1 was not working, i managed to do a new full firmware on lan port 2 and get the port 1 working again

It's not only the LAN1 port failing but the Quantenna radio (5GHZ) also, check your 5GHZ Radio under TOOLS as DISABLED. :)

RMA is the path, nothing new here, "welcome" to the club of RT-AC87U failing:

I think many of the RMA's might be due to the linux on the QTN chip getting corrupted somehow - if there was an easier way to jump into it's bootloader, one could bootstrap it perhaps with a new image.

That can't happen, as the QTN firmware image is stored in a file within the BCM firmware's filesystem, and gets loaded through tftp at boot time.
