I had a Dlink DIR-655 for years...firmware A1/A2
it finally died and I had to get one and I got the AC68U
It is rock solid, I would recommend passing on the 87

What with Gary Key of ASUS posting the 2678 firmware for the RT-AC87 to the forum, 87U/R owners have gotten another update in a very short period of time. I can't remember seeing this kind of dedication from ASUS with my previous AC-66 router (I can't speak for the AC-68 as I haven't owned one).

While there are still reported issues with a few features (namely the new QoS features, which I myself have not enabled or played with), I have seen great strides since the 1179 firmware that the unit had at release. I'm getting excellent wireless performance, and stability issues have stopped for me. I have no regrets in buying my AC87 other than that as I just passed my WatchGuard certification exam, I can now get a deal on one of their units (which is a great firewall/router, but its wireless can't match the ASUS).

You are correct, my 68 sucked for at least 2 months of firmware and I purchased about a month or so after it was released , I purchased this 87 around a month, the next day Asus released stable firmware. and with only minor problems that keep getting fixed .

I keep reading some people posting problems, but they seem to still be on old firmware, what gives with that, they can come on here and tell us how problematic the 87 is but too lazy to check for new firmware?

I will agree the rt-ac87r has issues (as all do when just released ) BUT all that I do with it are minor and Asus keeps pumping out updates. Also I had way way more major problems with the rt-ac68r that took months to fix. But for what you do with it, if it does not work then you either wait or bail, but for me this router so far is just outstanding (with what I use it for, so far).
Best of luck.

Edit:
I just noticed your other thread, and out of your list I don't get or see all them problems you listed. But I am using merlin newer firmware, have you even tried that?

I've tried all firmware versions and the issues persist. I have even more issues now.

If I use any other router IE 68R in a repeater mode to extend the wireless range mobile devices ipad/phones/etc will basically just "hang on loading anything and fail"

The 5Ghz band constantly just Hangs and restarts to the point of insanity. Tried every single version of firmware out there and nothing fixes these issues.

When I put back just the 68R's Config I get Zero of these issues present with the 87U config.

I'm basically using like 2x 68R 2x 87U
