Asus Router RT-BE88U | VLAN NOT Saving in Asusmerlin - Need Guidance

IRX

New Around Here
Hello Folks,

I am experiencing Issue with VLAN Configuration on RT-BE88U (AsusMerlin)

I recently upgraded my network with the Asus RT-BE88U and set up three VLANs for segmentation:

VLAN54 - Main Devices (Wi-Fi)
VLAN55 - TV (Ethernet, LAN2)
VLAN56 - Streaming Box (Ethernet, LAN3)

Steps Taken:
1. Updated to the latest AsusMerlin firmware before configuring
2. Connected devices via Ethernet: TV —> LAN2 & Streaming Box —> LAN3
3. Created VLANs (54, 55, 56) via the Web UI
4. Configured LAN2 & LAN3 as ACCESS mode in VLAN settings

Issue:
Despite assigning VLAN55 to LAN2 (TV) and VLAN56 to LAN3 (Streaming Box), the settings do not save properly. Both LAN2 and LAN3 keeps defaulting to single VLAN (usually VLAN55) instead of separate VLAN specified. Totally Weird 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️

I reset my Router to Factory settings few times and configured everything from scratch but no luck. Any insights on how to resolve this?

Thanks!

Hello Folks,

I am experiencing Issue in getting the VLAN Configuration saved properly to Ethernet ports on RT-BE88U (AsusMerlin)

I just set up a proper vlan with guest network pro on my gt-ax6000. When setting up the vlans did you make sure each was set not to talk to the main network? ...each gets it's own IP range?

If so it sounds like a bug ..besides rhe Lan assignment I'd also wonder if your vlan55 and vlan56 can talk to each other?

Yes I did that and different IP ranges for these 2 VLAN Networks but my main problem occurs once I try to save different VLAN ID to each individual port. The settings do not save properly and both Ports shows as the same VLAN ID. I even tried commands with help from chatgpt no luck as the web interface still shows as 1 VLAN ID for both the ports.

Both VLANs cannot talk to each other and even used commands to drop the packets to different IP networks using iptables.

Hi IRX,
You are not alone; I am having a similar issue! Although in my case, I only experience the issue on the Default IoT network. I'm in the process of writing up my findings but before I posted them, I was going to perform a factory reset to see if the issue was reproducible. I was also considering seeing if the issue was present in ASUS's firmware. I suspect that the SDN code is all ASUS and has nothing to do with Merlin's firmware.

I have found that, using the brctl command, I can manually assign the BE88U's ethernet ports to the desired VLAN profile. So, there is a workaround which certainly could be scripted and executed on start-up. My scripting skills are rudimentary so I'm not the best person to help you but if you can post the results of the "brctl show" command, I can walk you through the manual steps.
