Time Machine runs out of space

Hello!

I have set up Merlin on my ASUS AC56U. I really like it as it does everything I need to do. I have been lurking in these forums getting everything sorted out.

However, there is one thing I cannot get working. I can't even get the initial backup working. The time machine on the router just doesn't work for me. It gets to a certain point and errors out. Often it gives the message that there isn't enough space. The backup size is around 40GB going onto an empty 500GB drive. So space is not the issue. I have tried HDS+ with and without journaling. I have also tried FAT, ext3, and ext 4. I have tried backing up through the network cable and wifi. Also USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. No dice.

Your hard disk seem unstable. I see a lot of USB-related errors in your log. Make sure that disk uses an external power source, as USB-powered disks are rarely reliable.

It is in a powered USB 3 enclosure.

I will try a different hard-drive and report back.

Yes. It wasn't the disk.

I narrowed it down to either the hard drive case or the usb extension cable.

I changed both and my macbook managed to do a complete backup (through the network cable). Now, I am seeing if it will work through wifi.


PS I was wondering if the RT-AC56 can run ad-block software...

SOLVED!

As it turns out, you cannot use a USB 2.0 extension cable with a USB 3.0 enclosure.

DOH!

Everything is working as expected.

The male for USB 3.0 is the same as USB 2.0. I plugged the male for USB 3.0 into the female of the USB 2.0 extension.
