@ASUS_ASUSWRT It would be very good customer relations if Asus offered a very generous warranty swap of 88u for 87u for those with 5ghz problems. Many 87u users will have never come anywhere near these forums, will not be pushing the hardware very hard and be happy with their purchase. But those who have been struggling with the 87u for over a year, with still no resolution, are worthy (even if not strictly entitled) of a way out of the Quantenna quagmire. It is still far from clear that the 87u will ever meet its expectations.

interesting, but IMO not possible (but mayby asus like VW :D ). Faster you can rma Your 87U, and money back then can buy 88U.
 
Jong: what 5ghz problems?
battery drain, problems with idevices etc. all this bug is longer than year and still not resolved.
 
ASUS should back us our money and replace hardware from AC87U to example AC3200 ora AC88U. Product from start have big problem with this wifi radio 5GHZ and it is buG. Product should be replace on warranty.
 
for me its no problem....We have 3 years warranty and i will wait for end of this year and if he not fix all bug, i will rma my two 87u. I have backup n66u/rb951 and this work without problem :)
 
But what you write when you send on warranty ? Replace on other model ?
 
i think money back, or if 88u will be bug free change to this model (i not need ac3200 with two 5ghz radios)
 
The trouble is they only have to replace like-for-like under RMA, which doesn't help when it's a design problem. We in Europe could try to use European legislation to get a refund and it might well work, but to save hassle for Asus and the customers, it would be very good customer relations and do a lot for Asus' future reputation if they made a statement that either all who wanted a refund could get one or all who wanted to swap for an 88u can do so.
 
With the way asus is handling this 87u I doubt I'd waste my money an any of their routers again. My first and last. I've defended the router to a point but my 5gig is definitely unreliable. It is the only router I had to buy a laptop cooler for because of their horrible lack of venting. Until I installed Merlins firmware I had no stability at all requiring constant reboots. Merlins 355 has been going for 29 days now but I gave up on 5gig. And the stock gui had issues all over the place like it's written by beginner programmer's. On a device that's been out this amount of time it is time for Asus to do damage control or lose customers.

Dont worry, I get the resentment about this whole situation with this router I have one as well. On the other side look at the other manufacturers that also put out routers with Quantenna radios. Linksys hasn't updated theirs since December of last year, Netgears last update was July. At least Asus is trying to get things sorted out instead of just dropping a V2 like Linksys and Netgear both did and left their customers with no updates (ac88 is a different class). On one hand its great that they are still working on it, on the other yes this device does have its share of problems.
 
Yes, I admire Asus for how hard they have worked on this, I really do. I am sure in their private moments they must be every bit as frustrated with the Quantenna situation and what it has cost them!

But hopefully they will appreciate the many, many hours the community have also sunk into trying to get this solution working and, if by the time the ac88 comes out, the Quantenna hardware still cannot do what was promised to us and to Asus, I'd suggest it's time to help everyone move on! It may even save them money.
 
I get what your all saying. I agree to a point but it has been a year now. Here's the thing. ..It's Asus's name on the box. There's no doubt there is an issue with Quantenna but that is a battle for Asus, Linksys, Netgear to fight internally. Meanwhile Asus is on the hook for warranty and fixing the problem for their customers because again ... their name is on the box. So while I appreciate the efforts that the others haven't even done they have three choices as I see it if there is a real design flaw with the 5gig.

Continue releasing updates for the warranty period only to waste time with false hopes.

Do what linksys and the others are doing and just screw their customers over entirely with a useless flawed product.

Or cut their loses now, stop wasting time and resources fixing something that can't be fixed and offer customers special trade in or upgrade options.

As for the other issues that's all Asus. No heat vents on top causing overheating. Web interface that is a buggy mess even today. Heck even the buttons on front of the unit barely work. Dhcp issues with isp's that thankfully Merlins firmware fixes. And the fact that they rely on merlin way to much to fix their own issues. Where would we be without merlin?

I get some people's frustration, but this thread is about a specific version of firmware. Can we stick with that, and if you have issues with the RT-AC87 as a product unrelated to the 9177 firmware, start a new thread, or contribute to one that already exists regarding your issue?

Asus should acknowledge the fact , and provide customers upgrade options, like Intel recall as their CPU. Ac87u have been released a year, 5G problems obviously are the hardware design flaw rather than software issue, so constantly update the firmware has no meaning. Asus release a new firmware should fix known issues(at least major issues), rather than to solve several and then hold a few. Like the 9177 firmware, obviously the battery drain issue is not resolved, but also to publish as an official version, this is a perfunctory, the users are treated as guinea pigs.

I did not update ac87u firmware for a long time, also threw it aside no longer to use. I do not want to sell to someone else, because that would harm others. Currently i am using netgear R8000, good overall performance, no longer bothered me. Although I complained asus so much, but i really hope they can give solutions.
 
Updated to 9177 last night, came home to my wife at lunch, her 2 week old iPhone 6S just came off the charger 2 hours prior (charged all night) and was down to 27%. I picked the phone up off the arm of the couch and it was burning hot. I had her switch off 5Ghz and everything is fine.

Asus trying to burn my house down and kill my kid??

I have a hard time believing the wifi radio could cause such a drastic drain/overheat. Sounds more like a software issue or a crashed app on the phone.

With my Nexus 9 tablet, it took 6-8 hours to drain about 60-70% of its battery. Quite longer than 2 hours.

It's not ASUS fault that her iPhone 6S overheats, router bug or no router bug.

Oh, you're right. Sorry. Didn't mean to play the Apple hating game.

Guess there was never a problem with battery drain on 5GHZ. And I guess there is never heat transfer on draining batteries.

No issue on 9177 on 2.4GHz.
