upgrade question RT-66u AC 1750 to AX86 or 88??...

I have a RT 66u AC1750 that I think may need an upgraded, I have having connection issues. I am no pro by any means am my 70's and have limited tech abilities (like is said I am old)

I can probably afford around $200 USD at best. I have a fairly large house so need decent coverage, the RT 66u struggles for some locations but I make it work, an improvement would be welcomed.

I run 8 to 10 wireless WIFI at most and usually 4 or 5. A couple TV's a couple laptop's and misc.

Would either AX86 Pro or RX88 Pro be worth the purchase or can you give a better recommendation? I only have 1 WIFI 6 device currently and probably won't be upgrading unless something breaks!

I failed to mention that I have cable internet (but thinking about dropping it) and a 5G cellular internet that I am testing. So far I can not tell an difference both get me some streaming and spinning wheel issues. Maybe caused as much by the router as the internet service,,, I am thinking.

If you want the most performance and coverage, the GT-AX6000 is the model to look for (on sale). Note that as this is an older model (almost 3 years old today), it may have less support going forward.

The best bang-for-the-buck model today is the RT-AX88U Pro. Hands down.

The RT-AX86U Pro is not worth considering, even at a 50%+ discount (to me).

I also failed to mention that I do use a VPN and currently is it Surfshark, can it be setup on the router instead of each device and still give good protection?

The RT-AX86U (orig) is effectively obsolete (as it won't receive any 3.0.0.6.xxx level upgrades, and will be EOL soon.

The RT-AX86U Pro is a crippled (because of only one 2.5GbE port) and unbalanced hardware mess, as the video shows.

To put this in perspective, it is right up there with the RT-AC86U from 2018, performance-wise. Not worth the box it's sold in.

So no, to me, it isn't worth $0.01.

I did a quick on the GT AX 6000 and the AX 88u Pro and both are around $250 + tax.
So your choice would be the GT AX6000?
I may need to way another month to get the extra dollars.
Would you buy a used one to save 30$

I got the RT-86u Pro but am having problems with setup.

I can get to the setup site on the computer and go thru the process but it says no internet.

I have tried to use the ASUS app as well it will not connect it says to connect to a better Wi-Fi which I do, but still not internet.

As a followup I tried with factory fireman and then uploaded Merlin and of course no different .
But Merlin is loaded now just FYI.

RT-86u PRO used red light is on

Used RT-AX86U Pro router and not working is not something we can diagnose without your active help. The router has WebGUI (what you call the "setup site") with Status Information and System Log. The WebGUI is very similar to your old RT-AC66U router. The issue can range from defective used router through new device not registered with your ISP to initial setup misconfiguration. Flashing 3rd party firmware is not helping. After firmware change from Asuswrt stock (perhaps 3.0.0.6?) to Asuswrt-Merlin (currently 3.0.0.4) you have to do hard factory reset and start over with initial configuration.
