USB-AC56 with Windows 10 and Anniversary Update?

RogerSC

Part of the Furniture
I have an Asus USB-AC56 that used to work well with Windows 10. Then I applied the Anniversary Update, and now it connects for about 30 seconds and then disconnects. And Windows actually disables it.

So far I've tried the latest drivers from Asus, repairing that install, removing those drivers and re-installing, and the Windows troubleshooter. When Windows disables the adapter it takes down my system. Nothing responds after that. Never seen anything like it before.

Anyways, anyone able to get this adapter to work with the Anniversary Update? If so, what did you do?

I guess I'm also in the market for a wireless-ac adapter that works with the Anniversary Update. Any suggestions there?

Thanks.

sounds like you have another wifi driver conflicting with the asus , i have a similar issue with an asus pce-ac68 and the dlink dwa-192 drivers for some reason , removing the dlink drivers complatly fixed the issue and the asus works fine now

check you dont have any old drivers for wifi still floating around in your system

Well, whadda you know *smile*. Removing the driver for the Linksys AE3000 seems to have done the trick. Forgot that was there...

Thanks!

Don't use the Asus drivers - the ones in Windows Update work just fine...

(in other works, unplug the USB-AC56, go to Programs and Features, and remove the Asus stuff, then reboot - once the computer is back up - plug it in, Windows should recognize the adapter, and perhaps download updated drivers (or not))

In Single SSID configs, it will default to 2.4GHz preferred, but one can go into the advanced settings and change that preference...

Alright, after uninstalling the AE3000 driver as I mentioned above, went for about 15 minutes before a disconnect and disable.

Just tried uninstalling all the Asus stuff, and let Windows find a driver. That one worked for a few minutes, too, at about 1/2 speed. Then disconnected and Windows disabled it again.

Think I'm about ready to toss this USB-AC56...seems like it just isn't working, at least no good to me. I did try it on another computer that it hasn't been plugged into before, same weird behavior. I'm guessing at this point that this adapter might well have gone beyond the pale. Too bad, it was nice while it lasted *smile*.

So I guess I'm looking for another USB wireless-ac network adapter...any recommendations *smile*? Probably another thread there.

there is the new asus usb-ac68 or dlink dwa-192 death star

i assume you dont have room for a pce type adapter

Thanks, good ideas, I'll look at those. I could use a pci-e type adapter, but the USB adapters have been more portable between various laptops and desktops, so I've stuck with those. They've worked fine for me.

Right now I have a 3-stream USB wireless-n adapter plugged in...it's connecting at 300Mbps instead of 450, I assume that's because the Orbi is 2-stream instead of 3.

correct the max the orbi does is 867M on 5 gig and depending on how you set it ether 600M or 400M on 2.4 gig

So a wireless-1900ac adapter like the ones you suggested wouldn't give me more than a wireless-1200ac adapter with the Orbi...any suggestions for a reliable wireless-1200ac adapter? Thanks for your help, by the way.

correct , however they would give you better coverage

tbh most of the 867M 2 x 2 usb 3 wireless adapters are much of a muchness

Interesting, I appreciate your help.

Ended up with the D-Link DWA-192...odd looking thing, but working well for me. Had excellent reviews, and the price was right *smile*.

Gets my stamp of approval for a few days use here. Feels as fast as a wired connection, and no disconnects or other problems, which is what I'm looking for.
