USB3 Interference warning

FTC

Senior Member
Hi, it is a well known and commented fact that in order to get the max performance from USB3 hdds connected to our routers, disabling the 'professional' tab setting 'reduce USB3.0 interference' is a must, since otherways the device is being handled at USB2 speeds.

BUT in order to do this you must make sure that you use a very high quality and properly shielded USB cable. I found out the hard way today that with a poorly shielded cable you can basically completely destroy your 2.4ghz channel, up to a point that it is not even visible to clients. For a while I even thought that I had burned my 2.4 Ghz radio!

Now how to determine if a cable is good or not ? I guess it is trial and error. I have 3 cables and only 1 does not generare trouble, and both three look fine externally. A good test may be to run a copy batch to the USB device and measure the 2.4ghz wifi band performace from a client while doing so...

Maybe something like this?

USB cables must be rocket science or something. Look at the current disaster regarding USB 3.1 cables, where a lot of manufacturers were caught red-handed, trying to round corners to save a few cents, and selling cables that are (in some case) flat out deadly to your devices. A Google engineer killed his Pixel C with such a cable.

Could one add usb connectors to a cat7 or even better cat7a cable? Might that but a sure solution?

High quality cables are an absolute must - I've seen more than a few that looked nice, but had issues with bad grounding at the connectors... with USB3 it's even more important...
