using a cable router with a dsl router

Where I am living they have talk talk Internet service, the router supplied is a Huawei HG533 and it's a piece of crap, I have a rt-n16 sitting doing nothing and wondered if I could port the dsl router through the cable router and then I'll have richer features, the dsl modem has 4 lan ports and I can see where the phone line goes into it to provide Internet (think that's an rj11 socket), however there is also a rj45 socket labeled fibre and I'm not sure if that would be my route to use it with cable modem..I tried plugging an ethernet cable between the fibre port on dsl modem into the wan port of the rt-n16 but wasn't getting anywhere...maybe there were some settings that need making..anyone done this ?

You have to config your DSL router as BRIDGE so it only acts as modem (i'm sure there are many guides for your model). Connect N16's WAN port to Huawei's ethernet port then configure WAN settings on N16 depending on your internet connection (PPoE or Static IP).

TalkTalk DSL in the UK use PPPoA so there is no full bridge PPPoE mode available. I do not know if the HG533 does a half-bridge mode or else you are stuck with double-nat - 533 LAN to N16 WAN, or using the N16 as an access point - 533 LAN to N16 WAN. The 533 is a wireless router - its likely they don't make it easy to become a dumb modem - you need to be careful to not have both routers trying to do the same service.
