Very new to networking

New Around Here
Please explain things in detail if you have an answer. I am very new to networks and tried to use apple iCloud as a mass storage device. Since it links to the desktop, 2TB is of now use since it clogs up my 1TB drive on my M2 Max MBP. I do video and photo editing as a hobby and have an OWC Onvoy Thunderbolt 3-4. I use it for one project then transfer the project back to storage. Since I don't have a computer at home that stays awake, I can't attach mass storage to access remotely.

Just spitballing, but I have an old 2008 Western Digital My book live 1TB that still has the old HDD that works. Can I go into that thing and replace the HDD with an SSD? Have you guys ever tried that?

I am looking into raid arrays but from what I understand, you need a server. I may have access to an old Mac mini. I now apple dropped X serve, but is having an old mac mini plugged into RAID array and option.

I do want to know if the My book live idea will work.

Thanks for you help.

No, don't use this drive. Long time ago discontinued product with security warning:

"Western Digital has determined that Internet-connected My Book Live and My Book Live Duo devices are under attack by exploitation of multiple vulnerabilities present in the device. In some cases, the attackers have triggered a factory reset that appears to erase all data on the device... Immediately disconnect your My Book Live and My Book Live Duo from the Internet to protect your data from ongoing attacks."

I will do that since it is now a storage drive. What can you recommend as network storage? As my business grows I thought of a RAID array, but I need it hooked to some type of a server? I don't have another computer at home to connect drives to access though Apple iCloud and drive permission sharing. Any thoughts?

No.

For your business, priority 1 is your back up plan. 3 2 1 backup is recommended.

The 3-2-1 backup rule is a data protection strategy that recommends having three copies of your data, stored on two different types of media, with one copy kept off-site.

Here's a more detailed explanation:
  • Three Copies: This includes the original data and at least two backup copies.

  • Two Different Media: Store the data on two distinct forms of media, such as an internal hard drive and an external hard drive, or a cloud storage platform.

  • One Off-Site: Keep at least one backup copy physically off-site, separate from the location of the original data and any other backups.
This strategy helps protect against data loss due to various scenarios, including hardware failures, natural disasters, or cyberattacks.

All the people so far who have lost their homes/businesses to fire/flood/storms, unless they had off site backup, their data is gone.

Your NAS becomes one of your backup points--but should not be the only one.

Repurposing really old gear to do your backups: I don't think that's the best strategy. You want reliability.

"Reliable--efficient--cheap: pick two."
