Hi all, I’m having a little bit of a problem with my ISP. I have been with them for 5 months and I have a complaint against them with Ofcom, I have phoned twice over the last week to have the latest documented, on the phone they say they will send me a email but they don’t.

I’m only a very basic user of Merlin and only use the vpn and have no idea how to add addons.

I was wanting to know if I can install anything easy to monitor my WAN for dropouts like a Sam knows box.

Thanks.

If you are using Merlin then the basic first step is to SSH into the router, run AMTM, and set up conmon - initially at least using the defaults!
*If you are not already running any scripts, don't go mad.

Sorry I was in a bit of a rush to send the original post, I have a ASUS 16000-Axe, is AMTM what monitors it?

I didn’t add that I have a bit of a strange setup, I’m on Virgin as my isp, this is full FTTP not Co-axe. I am using a Hub5x this can’t be put into “modem mode” at this time due to the facility not being available, to combat this I have the router set to 192.168.0.1 or 1.1, then I have the WiFi turned off and everything is just forwarded to my ASUS that I had to change to 192.168.10.1.

My problem is that it always connected in the ASUS interface as it always sees the modem. Would it still monitor any outages?

AMTM is generally just a command line interface (CLI), launched via SSH'ing into the router, to install various addon scripts. See the previously mentioned Connmon addon script.
connmon is an internet connection monitoring tool for AsusWRT Merlin with charts for daily, weekly and monthly summaries.

Do you have the same Internet outages when directly connected to your ISP provided gateway?

It’s a whole area outage, ny neighbour and another friend in the village go off at the same time so I know it’s not just me.

If this is the case - multiple complaints from different subscribers may lead to issue resolution. The ISP won't pay much attention if just you complain based on own equipment observations. You have to show them issues with the equipment they have provided with the service. WAN dropouts on Asus routers is commonly discussed issue and not always related to the ISP gateway or service.

As you're in the UK you can simply setup external monitoring at the website below. This way you don't need to do anything with your router as it will be monitoring the connection between the internet and your Hub5x.

The problem I've had with the ThinkBroadband BQM is: If you use a domain name, it doesn't check often enough. So if you're with an ISP like BT, your IP changes, and you end up with a couple of weeks with it monitoring someone else's IP address!

Good point. Although in the OP's case Virgin Media's IP addresses tend to be very sticky.

That does remind me though that for the monitoring to work @houghton19 will have to make sure Firewall > Respond ICMP Echo (ping) Request from WAN is set to Yes.
