I have an AC56 and an AC66 and want to configure one as router and the other one as AP on the same network. I was wondering if one would work better for router or AP duty than the other.

I will run OpenVPN on the router and want to use the AC56 for attached storage, since it has a USB3 port.

Any thoughts?

I'd use the AC56 as a router (due to its stronger CPU, being only 2x2 and having slightly shorter range).

I would use a ethernet cable to connect them.. The ac66u has better performance and range... 56u has more horsepower

A related question, I have an N66U as my router and an old Dlink DAP1522 bridge/ap in a far flung location in my house as an ap. I'm considering replacing the Dlink. Is there an Asus product that would make sense as a replacement? I'm not planning on migrating to AC.

I have wondered about that as well. In my case I have an AC66U (router) and a N66U (AP). Is that the optimal setup or should I reverse it?

i think in your case, the hardware is nearly identical outside of the wireless interfaces, so you likely wouldn't see much of a difference either way

Having used both the RT-N66U and the RT-AC66U, I would be using the AC66U as the AP (assuming it will be the most central WiFi router serving the most clients).

The range and throughput are easily above the N66U and especially in the 5GHz band.

Of course: with both routers, RMerlin's 374.28_2 is recommended for the best wireless reach (with the -em version for the N66U, of course).

The link above indicates the settings to achieve the highest throughput for the N66U.
