I recently installed Xubuntu 18.04 on a computer previously running windows 10. I'm using a ASUS usb device to connect to the internet. I can connect to my mobile hotspot, so the ASUS usb wireless device is working. I cannot connect to my ASUS RT-AC68R (Merlin 384.13) home network. I've triple checked the password and have successfully connected other devices to my home network, so the network is working. My Xubuntu PC doesn't appear to connect to the home network at all.

Could it be a setting in the router preventing the connection?

compare the 802.11 specs between the router and the usb device. that's likely where the mismatch is. 802.11a/b/g/n/ac...there's a whole alphabet soup.
if the usb device and the router aren't talking the same language, one of them needs to be addressed.
it's not an xubuntu thing. (lubuntu user typing from that machine)

Thanks for your input. When I was running Windows 10 with the same ASUS wireless hardware, I was able to connect with my home network. I'll look into it though.

Have you checked the xubuntu forums for issues pertaining to that USB unit? It might be a driver issue...

Something similar happened to me when I switched from Windows 10 to Lubuntu 18.04 (Same Ubuntu base software, but different user interface) on a low end HP laptop.
The issue was on the drivers bundled for the Realtek wifi card. It worked fine in windows but not with 18.04
In my case the fix was to download and install a new driver. I will check the wifi adapter in my laptop and provide a link with instructions if you happen to be using the same driver.
Another option. Ubuntu just released version 19.10. That has the latest driver bundle. Going to that version will prevent the problem I had on 18.04.

*** Edit, after reading your initial post again, you do not have the same issue I had. Nevertheless going to version 19.10, might helps with drivers issues. ***

What is the model of the device?

Could it be that your ASUS RT-AC68R is transmitting on a channel that the USB stick cannot receive ?

Some channels are allowed in some jurisdictions, but not in others. If the router and USB stick were bought in different countries, there could be a mismatch.

Interesting theory. I'll look into it. Both devices were purchased in the USA but you never know! Thanks for the input.

The USB receiver is a ASUS Model-USB-N13....I'm attempting to update to 19.10 to see if that fixes this issue. Thanks for your input![
Just check. There used to be lots of problems reported on Ubuntu 12.04 to 16.04 with the USB - N13.

This adapter seems to be based on Realtek rtl8192cu. I will keep looking on issues on 18.04

Found some answers.
It appears that some Realtek wifi adapters have firmware issues. Some will not support AC even if they are supoused to do so.

To test this, use legacy mode in your router and disable WMM. This means no N and no AC speeds. Reboot the router and the Linux box

If you are able to connect you have the bug.
Usually users report the realtek chipsets work "well" in Windows because Windows drivers have nasty hacks to work around some of the bugs.

With Linux, there are some workarounds that basically disable the same features in the client.

For more details see:
https://unix.stackexchange.com/ques...ng-asus-usb-n13-adapter-realtek/252215#252215
There is a section there showing the parameters that should be manually updated for the USB adapter to work.

Just be aware of:
For having a more stable wifi connection, choose a notebook/iOT/router device where the WiFi chipset is not internally connected to the USB controller. Avoid realtek.
