    Thank you Zeb, I did see that note earlier but it seemed a lot more complicated than I anticipated. I thought I could just replicate the two key lines. So I bit the bullet and just made a new key. I'm just finishing off updating my various client devices. but thank you all the same.

    If you have a wee look at https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/changelog-3006 it normally states the latest GPL e.g. UPDATED: Merged with GPL 3.0.0.6.102_34369 which might be what you are after?

    ASUS XD5 firmware - Merlin compatible?

    I have two XD6 Ethernet wired as AIMesh nodes off an RT-AX86U Pro. Working very well. Would recommend this usage over trying to set up one of the pair as a router with the other as a node attached to it (especially wirelessly), read so many stories of flakiness with these setups.

    Absolutely unable to add new XT8 node to existing XT8 network. Any ideas?

    Maybe try to add it (set it up) as an access point rather than a mesh node, then update the FW that way first?

    Reaching here but I think (based on your additional arguments) you used Custom mode which uses Kernel mode, could you try a simple userspace mode to see if it makes any difference? [EDIT] Might need @ColinTaylor to pop by to provide some insight based on his vast experience.
