I'm in a similar boat as OP (minus the sys admin experience). I want to setup a mesh network with wired backhauls. I'll be on a 1G fiber internet connection and I'll have a mix of 2.4g smart devices, 5g devices, and wired devices throughout the home. I was planning on starting with 2 mesh nodes then expanding into 3 nodes if needed.

In terms of the devices, I'm looking at:
  • AX86U
  • XT8
  • Orbi RBK843S
Is AX86U basically the same wireless performance as XT8 if you're using wired backhauls? If so, being able to run Merlin seems to be the tie breaker here (and the AX86Us seem to have more RAM than the XT8s). Is there any other consideration I'm missing here?
