ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BE98 possible with ASUS DSL-AX82U (modem only)?

Hello all,

After several tests with different modems, it turned out that the modem of the Asus router DSL-AX82U (BCM 63178) is the most stable.
(Currently, only VDSL250 fibre optic is being expanded.)

I would therefore like to use ONLY the DSL-AX82U modem (if possible).

I am aware that I could use the GT-BE98 as a client, but as it is much more powerful, I want it to be the main router.
(The DSL-AX82U should not set up a WLAN or anything else, it should only provide and use the internal modem.)

I have tried the settings from this video (DSL-AX82U=Bridge-Mode):

But I cannot establish an Internet connection from GT-BE98 via PPPoE on DSL-AX82U.

Connected via LAN CAT8 cable via LAN1 Port DSL-AX82U to GT-BE98 WAN 10 GB Port.
AND DSL-AX82U LAN 4 Port to GT-BE98 LAN 4 Port.

GT-BE98: 192.168.1.3
DSL-AX82U: 192.168.1.1
both: 255.255.255.0
both: latest firmware

Only one connection, WAN, should be made between the two. (I would save the 10 Gbps port use/try the 2.5 Gbps port labelled WAN/LAN).

As I understand it:

OK, I enter all the provider data in DSL-AX82U (So quite normal).

But what do I have to set in GT-BE98 on the WAN port?
PPPoE too? Automatic IP, fixed IP?

In your link, it's routed to DSL-AX82U LAN1 Port and not WAN.
DSL-AX82U (WAN) > GT-BE98 (WAN)
or
DSL-AX82U (LAN1) > GT-BE98 (WAN)?

DSL-AC82U (LAN1) > GT-BE98 (WAN)

Then the PPPoE needs to be set on the GT-BE98 with what your ISP requires.

You are passing the router function to the GT-BE98. The MOdem function is to MOdulate/demodulate the signal.

The goal is shift provider data to the GT-BE98, because that is router function. The modem just provides the IP address to the router, (and likely DNS servers).

Thank you very much for your help and patience.

I spent several hours trying out settings today.
None of them worked.

I have now reconnected the Telekom Speedport Smart 4 (in modem mode), which works.
(Tomorrow I will work from home.)

Nevertheless, I still want to get it to work with the Asus modem, but it seems I will need more time to do so.
I will get back to you when I have new insights...

BTW:
Maybe it makes sense to use the Asus IP address range 192.168.50.x.
I had to constantly reset the settings here and thus re-assign the IP address each time.
Then log in again with the WLAN in the small Asus, etc. It was an endless back and forth.

At some point, the browsers also got mixed up with the router user interfaces, which made the whole thing even more difficult.

I had preferred the address range 192.168.1.x because the Fritz!Box uses this range, but so do the modems from DrayTek.

Newer ASUS routers use private IP addresses starting with 192.168.50 . Older ASUS routers (my first purchased in 2016) used 192.168.1 . There's an issue if you have what's called a double NAT AND there's what's called an IP conflict. Different brands deal with this in different ways. ASUS tends to let you deal with it, as technically it's your mistake.

So to my understanding you now have 2 modem/router combination units: Telekom Speed port smart 4 ; ASUS DSL-AX82U ?

Do you have to pay a fee to keep/use the Telekom unit, or is it provided for your use for free? You only need one modem is why I am asking.

Also don't try for hours, if something was miscommunicated, and it doesn't work, try to come back and explain what you did, or if you can take screenshots or pictures of the settings...

I have stability problems with my line, so I bought the Speedport Smart 4 router myself.
This is actually considered to be very stable.

However, even with the Speedport, the speed was throttled at night due to errors.

The Asus, on the other hand, seems very stable, so I would prefer it.
It works perfectly for me.

I only have one line, so only one modem is required.

I did not see this edit, so my apologies for that.

My last post links an ASUS page that seems up to date, but does not list the DSL-AX82U, so I was worried that they did not provide the same function.

Enabling PPPoE Relay is the first method mentioned. Definitely give that a try. I am hopeful it will work.

but I certainly don't need recommendations for modems, and I want to show you why:

I own:
1x ALLNET ISP Bridge Modem VDSL2 / Supervectoring 35b with Vectoring ALL-BM210VDSL2SV
1x Zyxel VDSL2 SuperVectoring Bridge Modem VMG3006-D70A
4x DrayTek Vigor 165
3x Technicolor DGA4132TIM
1x Telekom Speedport Smart 4
1x ASUS DSL-AX82U
1x Fritz Box 5690 pro (upgraded from an old Fritz Box 7590)

I updated the DGA4132TIM only to 1.03v (and need more time for reading to upgrade to higher versions).


However, the ASUS DSL-AX82U had one of the highest sync rates, but above all, it was also extremely stable.

BTW:
I even had two ASUS DSL-AX82U, a 2024 and a 2022.
But I only kept the older 2022 model because it had over 10,000 Kbps higher sync.
(Both devices with the same firmware and factory settings)

Only a DrayTek Vigor 165 with Firmware V4.2.3.1_MDM2 and Modem driver 8D1917_A/B/C HW: B
was faster in sync 267-269.000 Kbps, but it had 2 connection LOS in 2 hours.

BTW2:
My Internet connection got a little bit faster today (because it was throttled). From 185Mbps to 225Mbps which is effectively:

207.24 Mbps DL
34.36 Mbps UP
(Ookla)

I had tried all of them. Unfortunately, the "Remove VLAN TAG from WAN" option is missing.

(I have a water cooler project due tomorrow, so I don't have much time for further testing.)

It is not yet clear to me on which device I have to make the settings.

I now have a working combination with the Speedport Smart 4.

This means that I only have to adjust the settings in the ASUS DSL-AX82U router, correct?

There is absolutely nothing more to set in GT-BE98, correct?
The VLAN 7 entry was particularly important here for Deutsche Telekom, as otherwise the Internet connection will not be established.

And question for my understanding:

The GT-BE98 must establish the connection to the Internet via the DSL-AX82U using PPPoE - correct?
Or can/may the DSL-AX82U establish the connection himself? Or would that have disadvantages?

Yes if you got the Speed port to work with the BE98 then it should only be a matter of settings!

I had now changed the IP addresses, but I noticed one thing:

GT-BE98: 192.168.50.2
DSL-AX82U: 192.168.50.1


The IP range provided by GT-BE98 only starts at 192.168.50.3 - 192.168.50.254


So the question here is whether it can recognise the DSL-AX82U: 192.168.50.1 at all.


I have now made the following settings:

GT-BE98: 192.168.50.1
DSL-AX82U: 192.168.50.2

The IP range provided by the GT-BE98 now starts at 192.168.50.2 - 192.168.50.254.

Nevertheless, both devices cannot really be found.
I have to log on to the DSL-AX82U on the PC via WLAN.

Only then are both devices visible in the Asus Device Discovery Tool.
Only the GT-BE98 remains visible to the PC via LAN cable.

So there appears to be a problem here.

The above settings from the Asus link did NOT work.

I suspect that both devices first have to find each other in the network.
IP address and subnet mask match.

Edit:
This time, I had previously carried out a factory reset at DSL-AX82U.

I only accepted the declarations of consent from Asus.
But I did not carry out any set-up or manual set-up.
