USB performance is definitely better with the AC87U, tho you can gain some of this performance gain by switching to my firmware (I use the same NTFS driver for the AC68U as Asus does for the AC87U). That's where it will depend on how much you will save from the AC87U purchase cost by reselling the AC68U. If the AC87 ends up costing 100$, it might be worth it. If it ends up costing 200$, that 200$ would buy you a better Ethernet-attached/entry level NAS IMHO.

I have been using ur builds since i got the ac68 and I just updated my router yesterday to 47 , Everything is working fine . I will test the usb performance tomorrow . Thank you for the information [emoji2]

I see. I am again tempted to get a 87u. Wifi is actually faster, if only slight?

I got my hands on ac87 when it came out and i experienced a better rage over 2.4 & 5 Ghz than ac68 . I m not an expert ,just trying to help. RMerlin & Tim know better than me .

But i suggest u to wait a bit to compare it to ac3200 if u r not in a hurry .

power off the device and it will clear the nand and it should show up. For me, I stay away from all the usb based features on a router. Just seems sketchy vs a dedicated nas, or server.

Thanks, I removed power from the router for 30min.
Still no control.

I must be doing something wrong. I've always been able to do a direct flash update. Total loss of freq and control channel selection with version 2769.

Here is a screenshot of what I am seeing.

Try unchecking B/G protection.

I just wasted the last 3 hours on f/w version 2769 !!!

I should have listened to my gut - which was telling me:
"If it ain't broke - then don't fix it"

When I bought my RT-AC87u last week, it had firmware version 2061.
I found the UI to be a bit buggy, but for the most part, it worked (especially the QoS).

Fast forward to tonight (Sunday night).
I decided to upgrade to the latest firmware - version 2769.
Big mistake, and a waste of 3 hours !!

For those of you who will ask - yes, I did reset to factory settings after the upgrade, and re-entered everything again from scratch.

Here's what was wrong with 2769 for me:
- very buggy UI using Internet Explorer v11 (latest version)
You could basically forget about trusting any information on the screen.
As an example, the Adaptive Qos screens. When you clicked on the QoS TAB to set it up, it would show you only partial parts of the bottom of the screen (ie, the top was simply cut off and not there) and it was frozen in that position. Also, clicking on anything there would not work at all.
The Bandwidth monitor would not even recognize the proper traffic from the proper device, nor display the totals properly on the dashboard gauges.

- QoS DID NOT WORK !!!
I set up my QoS as Traditional, (just as I did on firmware 2061), giving it the highest priority (this is for my Vonage VoIP device).
When I tested it, it did not work at all - the voice was completely garbled and cut out altogether. I tried rebooting the router - no change. I tried disabling QoS, rebooting, then enabling QoS again. This (seemed) to work - as I tested it a few more times, and the voice quality was ok. This was short lived. My gut was telling me to test it a few more times, so I did - and it started garbling again, and cutting out again !!

Enough was enough.
I loaded version 2061 back on the router, reset to factory defaults (red reset button on back of router), configured everything again, then tested.
As before, QoS worked WELL again - as it should.
I tested it for another 30 minutes or so, just to make sure, and the QoS remained rock-solid (reliable).

I will keep 2061 for the forseeable future, until I feel stupid enough to try a (new) firmware from Asus again - and waste another few hours troubleshooting everything.

By the way, even on 2061, I don't trust Internet Explorer.
Firefox has NO issues displaying the UI correctly.
IE is unreliable, even in compatibility mode.

Thanks for the suggestion to try uncheck b/g.

Interesting, I did that and applied. Unit responded it was applying new settings.
When the screen returned nothing had changed.

I thought lets try changing anything else i.e bandwidth, hide SSID, wireless mode.
Again applying new settings. Screen returns and nothing has changed.

Thinking corrupted down load, I tried different downloads of 2769 = no help.
2769 is listed in Asus web only under the 87U at this point. I am applying it to my 87R but R/U hardware are the same.

So again, I can go back and flash 2678 and all controls function properly.

I know I'm new but thanks for allowing my comments.

Clear nvram. After upgrading to 2769 turn off router, hold WPS button in the back and power it one WHILE HOLDING WPS. Keep holding wps button until the power led flashes then release wps button. I was having an issue with 5ghz band not showing and this resolved it.

Your solution worked perfectly. Had to go through entire router setup again, but the result was complete restoration of everything. Now operating fully under 2769 no problems.

Thanks for everyone’s help. Glad to be a new member of the SNB group.

Are there any word on when we can expect the AC3200?

Asus hasn't made any official announcement about the RT-AC3200 release, so even if Tim or myself would know, we wouldn't be allowed to tell you.

Dear god I just spent a couple of hours losing my mind due to that Sonos bug they've apparently fixed. It wasn't immediately obvious to me that my Play 1's would be the culprit. And FWIW, the same bug is present in the AC68.

I hope we see something this week, still bugs and 5ghz issues that need to be fixed.

They're still actively updating the firmware. I believe they're up to 327X right now. I'm fairly certain we'll see something this week.
