I don't know how it works in the US, but over here in Canada the ISP relies on the modem's MAC address to authenticate you, not the router's. That might be because we use DOCSIS 3.0 (and 2 for older/slower profiles) perhaps.
Most ISP in the US use the MAC address of the client hardware that gets ip from the WAN to authenticate. It could be the router' MAC or the pc's that ask an IP from the WAN DHCP server. It's the same reason US clients can clone the MAC address when needed. :)

slow bandwidth fixed with a router reboot...

Hello,

I noticed my bandwidth was very slow this morning. I rebooted the router and that fixed it.

I did have a ssh command tool connected for 24 hours ( was browsing files on the router ) and also had the router's GUI up for the same time. I forgot to log off both.

So I logged out of both before the reboot.

Not sure if these two things could have caused the problem. Maybe so.

Anyone else experience this sort of bandwidth thing with 372.31?

I'm doubt it but I'm just reporting for FYI.

Thanks.

David T.

Howdy folks,

A new build of Asuswrt-Merlin is now available for download. This build saw the core code merged with the recent final 372 release from Asus (I was previously using a very early version of the 372 code branch).

This update includes the AiCloud security fixes - upgrading to this version ASAP is STRONGLY recommended if you use AiCloud.

The RT-N66U is still using the older (but stable) wireless driver from build 270. That means it will be compatible with Intel devices, however it will lack HW accelerated PPP support and the Xbox optimization option.

Not much else in the changelog versus 372.30, partly due to lack of time, but also because the merge with the final 372 code was far more complex than previous merges (a typical merge takes me an evening, this one took about three days). I want to ensure that I have a stable base FW with 372 before going forward.

One notable addition to the Experimental build is support for the Yandex.DNS service. This is a DNS-based filtering service that Asus is integrating into the firmware. You can find the settings on the Parental Control section.

Speaking of which, the Parental Control time slot management is currently broken under Internet Explorer 10. The issue seems to lie within the third party Javascript code used by Asus for this calendar, and a bit over my head to fix. Until Asus fixes it you will have to use a different browser for managing Parental Control.

That's about it. As usual, see the changelog for the details. Enjoy!

Make sure you have it set to 20 MHz, and to a fixed channel.

I've done this and mine still drops about once a day. Matter of fact my kids just called me at work saying their devices won't connect. Restart the router and they're back up and running (for now, until next restart).

Merlin, I'm sure you're aware of it but there is a similar thread regarding the 2.4 drops in the ac66u portion of this forum.

Running this on the RT-N16...

I was having drop outs that came up recently (very erratic) - I upgraded AsusWRT thinking that would solve the problem, but it seemed to only exacerbate the problem. I proceeded to do a full factory reset and redo my configuration, and so far, so good.

That said, I have been doing some testing, as my ISP claimed that my internet speed doubled, but I have seen no evidence of this.

My wired connection clocked speeds at upwards of 60mbps, while my laptop and phone are only coming in at 30mbps.

Not that this is a non-starter, but it would be nice to not have my speeds cut in half over WiFi - anyone have any thoughts on this?

slow 2.4ghz

I've read through a bunch of forum pages and tried a ton of different items so i'm hoping someone here can help.

A bit of background, somewhat comical. I moved into a new place which offered FIOS (50/25) and after setting up the actiontec router couldn't get my wifi speed to my Iphone 5 or Ipad Mini to download greater than 20mbps standing next to the router in performance N only mode.

I tried to wireless connect w/ an old dell laptop but couldn't get past 10mbps over wifi.

I tried a host of options including parabolic reflectors (helped some) but that wasn't a perm solution. Bought a few routers, the last two were an Apple Airport Extreme and the Asus RT-N66U. Outside of the Asus, the download speeds were the same, sub 20mbps being the norm.

After running through the ASUS set up i got 50+mbps on both Apple devices. I eventually figured out that I was using the 5GHz but my girlfriend's iphone 4s which isn't capable of the 5GHz was connecting on the 2.4GHz (separate SSIDs)... and her download speed tops out at 3mbps.

We also have an older macbook pro and it pulls down about 35mbps over wifi so what i deduced was the speed was only affecting the IOS devices.

I just installed the the .31 Merlin build and forced the mini onto the 2.4GHz SSID, the download initially ramps up to 10mbps down but drifts back to 3mbps, upload is a slightly faster at 5mbps.

Are there any IOS users who can share settings or suggestions for 2.4ghz... i'm probably flagged by amazon by all my purchases and returns by now.

Freq: 2.4ghz
hide ssid: no
wireless mode: N only (nothing else checked)
channel bandwidth (20/40) also tried with 20 only and 40 only
Control channel: 9 (tried auto and every other channel)
Auth: WPA2
WPA encr: AES

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Help! I cannot upgrade N66U - 3.0.0.4.270.26 to RT-N66U_3.0.0.4_372.31_0.zip

When attempting to upgrade my N66U from "3.0.0.4.270.26" to the newest build "RT-N66U_3.0.0.4_372.31_0.zip", it indicates I'm not on the correct version to upgrade. Am I missing an intermediate update somewhere? How can I can I get this on the latest build?

Just a hunch, but be sure to unzip the downloaded zip archives to get to the .trx files inside that are the actual firmware files to use in your upgrades. You cannot use the zip archive files in an upgrade.

If you're already there, sorry to mention this.

You should be able to do the upgrade that you're asking about without a problem...but you should clear the router's nvram after doing this particular upgrade before you enter your settings, since you're going between .270 and .372, too far apart to not do that.

Hi, I flashed the latest stable RMerlin build on my N66U, but for some reason I cannot attain my full speed via LAN. My broadband package is 300mbps, but I only get ~230mbps on speedtest, while the router my ISP provided can hit 320mbps. I factory reset, and also cleared nvram but the LAN speed is the same. Is there any way to get it to achieve full speed? My laptop is a 2012 Macbook Pro. Thanks :)

Is the fios modem still providing wifi? I would make sure that is disabled. Also leave the channel bandwidth on 20mhz. One more thing you can try is to reset the network settings on the ios device but remember you will lose all wireless passwords.

You know, I've been having similar problems with my iPad 3...sometimes the internet speed test will show the full download speed of 16Mbps, and sometimes it shows 2 or 3Mbps, or some download speed between those. The upload speed is always full speed. All my other devices are all behaving as normal, getting full wireless speed and the router has it's usual outstanding range on 2.4GHz., just the iPad is problematic on the internet speed test. The important thing, though, is that my iPad is functionaly fast enough on WiFi no matter what the internet speed test shows. So I'm taking the iPad speed test results as "interesting", and basically ignoring them, having decided that this is an iOS 6.1.3 thing, and I don't care enough to worry about it at this point.

I've tried power cycling my iPad, "reset networking" on it, and even a full restore install, where it totally reinstalls iOS, and nothing really affects this. Generally, immediately after I do something like resetting networking on my iPad, it will show full speed, then the speed becomes more random after a little while.

So, like I said, at this point I've decided that the internet on my iPad is totally functional, and is way fast enough, so I'm not worrying about it. Maybe it'll get fixed with iOS 7, who knows *smile*?

You may have a setting somewhere that is problematic for your iPad, and that's why things aren't working well, or you may be encountering what I'm seeing, which is just odd performance on the internet speed test. I can't use my ISP's speed test on my iPad, since it requires Flash, of course *smile*. Hopefully what you're seeing isn't affecting your experience doing things on your iPad, just your speed test results, that's the way that it is here.

Problems with Rt-N66U and Hidemyass

I have read everything on the forum regarding this foirnware, and followed every instruction to the letter:

- Cleared NVRAM
- Updated to 3.0.0.4.372.31 (which worked beautifully except when trying to access VPN service) and WAN access is configure wih Auto IP:
WAN Config.png

- Configured Client one as indicated for Hidemyass
config1.png
Config2.png

just omitting the commands:
echo USERNAME > /tmp/userpass.conf
echo PASSWORD >> /tmp/userpass.conf
chmod 600 /tmp/userpass.conf
and
auth-user-pass /tmp/userpass.conf
As I understood are replaced by the functionality on the extended GUI of the RMerlin build

Keys from Hidemyass are: CA 1316 bytes, Client Certificate 1386 bytes and Client Key is 876 bytes. I could not find any reference to wether I should have entered a static key or what it should be.

When I start the VPN Client, apparently everything is normal, as can be seen on the log of a recent: Reboot and subsequent VPN Client Activation .

From there on I cannot access the network from wired or wireless connected device...

Please help, as I would like to get this great combination of Router and Firmware working wth my VPN Service.

If you want Internet traffic to go through the tunnel, you have to set "Redirect Internet Traffic" to "Yes".

Also, your client is disconnecting probably due to inactivity:

"Aug 14 12:34:33 openvpn[434]: [server] Inactivity timeout (--ping-restart), restarting"

See if the tunnel provider has any info regarding this.

Hi,

You should do a NVRAM clear AFTER the update to then new version. Only then the new versions hidden NVRAM settings will be used!

If you do the NVRAM clear BEFORE the update, some old NVRAM settings might be in contradiction with the new firmware version...

With kind regards

Is the fios modem still providing wifi?

Thanks for that suggestion. When I ran the ASUS setup cd and I was able to get the faster speeds, I assumed that the setup cd also disabled the Actiontec router.

I just checked and Actiontec was still active. I disabled the wifi there and got subtle 2.4GHz performance. About 4-5mbps down but it seems more stable than before.

After a reset of the mini's network settings, it's showing about 3, but the upload is around 10mbps... download is steady as though it's been capped (speed test shows a steady stream), upload looks like it wants to go faster but is being capped.

Going to reboot both routers and see what that gets me.

An update....

So my wifi 2.4GHz speed across all devices has fallen considerably. I’m in the 1-5mbps range for download/ 3-6mbps for uploads.

I went through all the channels getting the best performance from channel 5 (I live in a building with 400+ units), where the ASUS unit can easily pick up over 30 other networks. Channel 1 has twelve devices, channel 6 has ten devices & channel 11 has ten devices.

Under channel 5 (no devices), I’ll get 35down/28 up which is great but those speeds inevitably fall back to the 1-5/3-6 range in about 20 minutes. Is there a way to better stabilize these speeds. At this point I’d settle for 10-15mbps down.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

on the professional tab in wireless you will find an option "enhanced interference management". If that is enable disable it to see if it helps?

Channel 5 overlaps with both channel 4 and channel 6, so you will still have issues.

Unfortunately in a crowded area the only reliable solution is to switch to the 5 GHz band.

Thanks. I forgot to mentioned that I also cleared the nvram also after the update.

RMerlin, thanks very much for your time and indications.

I did set "redirect Internet traffic" to "Yes" and the problem continued.

Then contacted Hidemyass support and they indicated that both on LAN - DHCP DNS Server should be directed to their DNS, and on WAN "Connect to DNS Server Automatically" should be se to "No" and THeir DNS Server address or Google's should be place as "DNS Server1" & "DNS Server2".

After each change I pressed "Apply", then rebooted the Router and tried again.

Results are the same.

I am attaching copies of:
