Had to switch back to stick firmware due to performance issues on both wireless especially 2.4 Ghz and LAN. I usually stick with Merlin builds but this one caused issues for me.

What router model? What wireless card? What troubleshooting steps were taken?

Without that info, it's impossible for me to check if it's indeed an issue that needs fixing or not.

I'm getting a lot of this error since I've upgraded to this version, also I noticed that my cpu load is sitting at 0.00, 0.00, 0.00. When I revert back to 374.31, everything is fixed. I'm running a RT-AC66U. The bottom is part of my logs, it repeats every few min. Please help.

Hey Merlin,

So I'm trying to figure out how to use QoS to limit download speed on an incoming transfer. I'm essentially trying to limit the max speed of any file transfer to a threshold where the incoming traffic won't increase latency by a significant degree and mess with my gaming.

So right now I've got a rule set up to capture that in the lowest priority, and it doesnt seem to be limiting bandwidth correctly. I'm on a 100mbps connection, (double checked that its entered correctly in the main qos screen). Using a steam download as a test, I tried 70%, expecting to see downloads limited to roughly 7MB/sec, but it hovers around 9-10MB/sec. Dropping it down to 40%, I should expect to see ~4MB/sec...almost no difference. 20%....still about the same. 10%....finally it seems limited to ~5MB/sec, even though it should be ~1MB/sec. 5% pushes it down to 1.5mb/sec....still far more than the ~500KB/sec I'm expecting. 1% pushes it down to ~300KBsec....still 3X about what I'm expecting.

Its clearly capturing the transfer in the correct class, since it's having some effect. Maybe there's a bug in the calculation somewhere?

, also I noticed that my cpu load is sitting at 0.00, 0.00, 0.00.

Are you complaining that your router isn't busy? :) This simply means that there is no process actively using or waiting for the CPU, I don't see anything abnormal there.

This seems to be a Samba-specific thing. A quick check on Google returned very little info, this might be caused by a problem with whatever device on your LAN which is currently your master browser - from the look of it, the router is unable to connect to it to sync the list of network devices. Not really a bug in the firmware itself.

No idea, not really an expert on Linux traffic classification (which is why I don't make any change to Asus's QoS implementation). Keep in mind that traffic will get classified in the lowest class only if there is no higher priority traffic requiring the bandwidth. The rest of the time it will still use the full bandwidth available. It works as a QoS, not as bandwidth throttler.

Hmm...that doesnt reflect the behavior I'm seeing. The upload limit on your FW seems like a hard bandwidth limit any time there's any other higher priority traffic.

I tried a few other things. On a 100/35 connection, to be more specific. Limited all ingoing and outgoing bandwidth in every class to 10%, and set the PC to highest. There should be no other higher priority traffic in or out, so the way you describe, it should take 100% of the bandwidth in both directions...in this case, download is throttled to 30mbps incoming, but upload is the full 35.

Same conditions, all classes limited to 10% in/out, but setting the PC to low or lowest....same behavior as when it's set to highest, 30/35.

I tried changing the amount of bandwidth I claimed to have to 5mbps/5mbps, with no QoS rules at all. So it shouldn't be doing any prioritization, and even if it did, it should conform to the 10% in/out class limits anyway....and it measures at 1/35!

Then I tried changing my bandwidth to 100mbps both directions, set all bandwidth limits to 1%, no qos rules at all....and now I'm pulling 30/35.

It doesn't seem to make any sense at all! As far as I can tell, the upstream works exactly as you describe - full bandwidth with no other traffic, regardless of priority. The downstream OTOH, seems to be a hard B/W limit, but one thats completely broken. 10% of 100mbps should give me 10mbps, but I get 30mbps. 10% of 5mbps should give me 500kbps....but I get 1mbps.

I tested on both your F/W and the stock ASUS, and the results are exactly the same. So it looks like a ASUS bug...where would I go to report it?

Either way, I really don't need full blown qos with my BW, just a limiter to prevent total saturation. Is there a simpler way to achieve that on your FW?

RT-AC66R - various wireless devices, including Sony NSZ-GS7, Centrino N-6200, MAC Book Pro.

I reset the router to default and rebooted my devices. Thanks I will try again this afternoon as well.

I had the same, but when I set "Force as Master Browser" and rebooted it went away.
Now I only see this popping up sometimes:

This is normal. It simply means there was an election on the network, and your router won the election since it's set to the highest priority possible.

a bit more about master browser functionality.. look here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/188001

Is there any benefit to turning this on? I have a mixed network of Macs, Win8, Synogy NAS, printers, portable devices, and home theater stuff (tivos, receivers, AirPlay devices, etc (so things already have a myriad of ways they are identifying themselves, some of which I can modify, some I cannot).

I reserve IP addresses manually so it's easier for me to see on the router what device is doing what (and also group devices in segments by type, just for identification reasons) and I can name it in the DHCP reservation.

When I scan my network with a utility some are named w/ NetBios, others don't have friendly names, etc. It's not what I'd called a problem though.

The master browser is chosen through a weighted election. Whoever has the highest priority wins. In a typical network, servers have a higher priority than workstations. In a network where you only have workstations, that means a random computer will win the election. If the firewall on that computer isn't properly configured, you will end up with other computers being unable to browse the network.

The idea of forcing the router to become the master browser is that you will know for sure that it will win the election, and it is already properly configured at the firewall level to act as the master browser.

If you have a server or a NAS, this might not be necessary.

Is a USB drive a requirement for the master browser option to function?

I can't seem to set my RT-N66U as master browser / WINS, it never shows up in an ipconfig /all as the WINS server. It always used to work with Tomato though.

Here are my settings: http://i.imgbox.com/adkOjFum.jpg

Workgroup is the same in all computers/router.

I can confirm this with a lame scheme I used to check if master browser was working with Tomato: changing workgroup name in my Windows machines with router as master browser was instant vs a 5 seconds delay without router as master browser.

A USB disk should not be required, unless there's a bug. I remember specifically implementing code to have Samba start even if there is no USB disk plugged in.

Don't forget to renew your computer's lease after enabling WINS mode, as this parameter gets pushed by the DHCP server.

I've just replaced my RT-N66U with a RT-AC66U (RT-N66U had faulty ethernet ports) and am running this Merlin firmware.

Wired I'm getting 74Mbps down and 15Mbps up which is what I would expect.

Wireless is appalling compared to the old RT-N66U though, I'm getting 45Mbps down and .41Mbps up. I'm running 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz (same wifi config as the old router, although obviously have 80Mhz on the 5Ghz band too with this one)

No idea why? On the RT-N66U wireless speeds were not too much slower than wired, albeit with worse latency.

I was running an older Merlin firmware on the RT-N66U (Asuswrt-Merlin 3.0.0.4.372.31)

Anything I can try before I take this router back as faulty?

When you go to this page:

http://192.168.1.1/Main_WStatus_Content.asp

(I'm assuming it's named same thing on RT-N66U & AC66U)

what speeds are your wireless devices connecting to the AP at?

Have you tried a different channel manually, toggling 20mhz/40mhz channels, and multiple devices from multiple physical distances from the AP?

How does 2.4ghz compared to 5ghz work in same location (ideally, same room as your AP to test).

It sounds like you're running external speed test(?), first let's figure out what's going on with the WLAN and the speeds your local devices are connecting to the AP. Above link should show you one way your AP sees it. But it's also good to check from your devices (and wifi strength bars on portable devices don't count).

On an OSX laptop you can option click on airport icon to get RSSI strength and speed indicators, on Win 7 & 8 you probably right click on LAN icon in systray and check details (a little foggy, it's not been my main OS for awhile).

On an aside, next time verify bare minimum operation out of the box before you upgrade f/w, it's easier to troubleshoot that way. If you don't get satisfactory results with above troubleshooting I'd say then reload the OE f/w and repeat tests.

Try using beta3.
I just went back to that one and the problem on the 5ghz seems to go away. I went from dropping speeds and flakey connections to full speed and sturdy on my sgs4 on the 5ghz.

Not sure what the problem is but 2.4Ghz seems to be fine on the latest version.

I have a AC66 as well btw.
