Wireless node discovery doesn't work in Asuswrt-Merlin. You have to use Ethernet connection for the initial setup.
Related question: If my node is already connected before I flash my router with Merlin, will I have to re-connect it via ethernet? Does flashing to Merlin reset the mesh setups? Or will the fact that it was connected before the flash mean it will stay connected after I've switched the router over to Merlin?

@jasons6930 no flashing merlin doesn't reset the NVRAM, but it's better to reset to factory after fleshing .
You can try to run it without resetting to factory, but you may encounther weird behaviours

It will stay connected most of the time and this trick is used when you have AiMesh node discovery issues, but you want to run Asuswrt-Merlin on your main router. You start on Asuswrt, connect your nodes, flash Asuswrt-Merlin on the router after. If you lose the nodes down the road though you have to find working for you workaround. Wired nodes usually have no issues.

I've been running the latest release (388.1) for a couple of months with no issues. Around two weeks ago I started getting sporadic issues reaching the internet – running conmon shows the connection drops completely for up to a minute at a time. Has anyone else had this issue and found a workaround or fix?

Update: I wiped and set everything up from factory and that seems to have solved it.

You should do the factory reset after flashing the firmware. Doing the reset first probably doesn't hurt anything, but after is what gets you the benefit.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Been running GNUton's Merlin port on both XT8 here without any problems. 66 days plus 22 hours uptime just now.
I’ve a question : after firmware upgrade, say you do factory reset. Can you still restore config from backup or that would beat the purpose of factory resetting it in first place?

Hi there,
Today I am finally happy to announce that we have a Merlin stable release for the usual models:
- DSL-AC68U
- DSL-AX82U/DSL-AX5400
- RT-AX82U

and also for two new entries:
- TUF-AX5400
- ZenWiFi AX (X8) / RT-AX95Q

If you have wishes to see Merlin running on other routers please remember to register your vote here:

As always thanks to all people from the community for the feedback, @RMerlin for the support and for the amazing work and ASUS for collaboration and dev units.
I will be short here, so that's it for now. Feel free to grab it until is hot from
Any hopes for TUF AX6000?

Sorry to be asking this, I have read through the forum and I'm still not certain.
I have a pair of ZenWiFi AX6600 (XT8) units that I would like to install Merlin firmware on.

  1. Is Merlin firmware compatible? I've checked the label on the device and confirmed it is V1 hardware.
  2. If it's compatible, what version do I download? I don't see a version for XT8 listed. I read that XT8 is RT-AX95Q, but I don't see that listed either.
Thanks!
