I installed the new firmware on my new AC68u router. But I still can't access the usb 3 or usb 2 hard disks from my laptop via wireless. I wonder if other people are having the same issue with this router.

By can't access if you mean you can't see RT-AC68R as a network computer, yes I have the same issue in version 454 also. It worked for a few days and then one day it disappeared with no configuration changes to the router.

Exactly, I can't access it as a network computer. But in the wired mode, it is accessible.

The webui inaccessible issue is probably caused by a recent security change did to the firmware. If there are numerous attempts at accessing the router's webui with invalid username/password, then that IP gets blacklisted. The idea is good, unfortunately the implementation is flawed, as anything that tries to access the router's point 80 just to look for the presence of a web interface will trigger that. Rebooting the router or changing the client device's IP address will work - for a while.

That sounds right and feels like the same thing that happens on the RT-AC66U.

501 has been very bad for me. Client disconnects everywhere, and all users in my house reporting unstable internet the day after I put the firmware up. Sadly going back to the beta.

Same here, not from any of the PCs or media player, but can access from my tablets and mobiles. how bizzare!! Tried everything.

Try to disable the firewall, it worked for me.

works great on AC56U

This new beta works great on my AC56U

OpenVPN clients now have DNS access(that didn't work in the last version)

5ghz AC wifi....still just as fast as before...

FINALLY!....they add in the detailed info to the wifi log....(only merlin had that before)..

Now....if Asus would add an option to turn off the LEDs...would be awesome. (I could then remove the black duck tape i have covering them)

EDIT: well...maybe they did do something to the wifi driver....i was having issues streaming video in my living room...which is about 30 feet away from router....never had issues before...signal still was strong...link rate around 250....

So I think I finally perfected my network on .501. I did a NVRAM reset (via the WPS button) instead of the Restore. Now. I also went though and tweaked like crazy and I'm happy to report I no longer have random internet delays where I would stay connected, but no data would transfer, and all my clients no longer report issues on this firmware.

I don't think I'll be touching anything else now for a good while :)

Having had the chance to study the 501 code, here are the changes that Asus haven't mentioned in the changelog (for those who, like me, like to know such details :) )

  • Asus updated both dnsmasq and radvd to the latest version (first one handles DNS and DHCP, second one handlers IPv6 router advertisement)
  • Lots of changes surrounding the USB handling.
  • Regarding the new HW acceleration modes: there are now three modes from what I could understand (note that I'm not 100% sure, but pretty close):

    1) No CTF (no HW acceleration at all)
    2) Level 1 CTF (which is the same as previous FW versions)
    3) Level 2 CTF (which is CTF + FA)

FA = Flow Accelerator. It's a Broadcom technology that's supposed to improve network throughput. As usual, there is zero technical details as to how they achieve this, what are the side effects, etc...

Now, the weird part: like other users reported, setting CTF to Level 2 does not seem to work for me either. After it's rebooted it's back on Level 1. I tried querying the wireless driver to see what FA level is supported by the hardware, and it reports... 0. So, either a) not all router models/revisions support it, b) Asus hasn't fully enabled it yet in the driver, or c) the routine that reads the supported FA revision is broken.

If any of you is able to set it to Level 2 and have it stick there after a reboot, please let me know. I'll send you a tool so you can try querying the router for me to see if it returns a different FA revision.
  • For those wondering about the new info now shown on the Wireless Log page: PSM = Powersaving Mode. You can see that flag get on and off between refresh with mobile devices (I saw it with my Nexus 7). No idea what the two other settings are exactly (SGI = Short GI, and STBC = ...STBC).
  • Lots of code cleanup around Dual WAN - unsure if there were any real functionality change along the way
  • They have temporarily disabled the bruteforce attack protection that was recently added to the http server, so you should no longer get locked out of your own router through devices/software constantly hitting port 80 on your router.

Due to both the Wifi and USB changes, a factory default reset is indeed strongly recommended when flashing this FW. (I even did one myself, which I rarely do).

still though, minidlna server sucks comparing to yours FW 374.36 Beta 1 (e.g. in I can't play media which I can play in yours FW, 2 GB large files)

Level 2 does not stick on my AC68U. I'm assuming mine is the first revision, as I bought mine the day it released on Newegg :)

That's odd, since I haven't done any change to minidlna. In fact the one patch I have applied to it was sent to Asus, which applied it to theirs a few weeks ago. Might be something else that's different (I do use a much newer version of the uPNP daemon for instance).

Merlin when will u be included in your firmware ?

When I'm satisfied with its stability. I have no timetable nor any ETA, so I don't know when that'll be.

Thanks for reporting it. Asus also sent me mine at about the same time it hit retail, so it's probably the same revision.

I don't know if there was any revision update, that's why I'm curious to see if anyone is actually able to enable level 2 support.

No joy on my side either RMerlin :( I think what we are having is having the same hardware revision + most likely ASUS haven't really enabled it fully.

Just like one of my Internet Service Provider (SingTel) decided to roll-out systematical speed for existing fiber subscribers quietly. ASUS is doing it quietly as well :D
