Router is the ideal place to setup VPN, same is true for DDNS. I believe, most will agree with this claims.

I am both double NAT-ted (except on one router) and use twodns.de for DDNS. Many people are also double NAT-ted or use DDNS not supported by an Asus Router. As there is no Custom field, on Asus router we must either use e.g. entware inadyn or write a script. Or use another device for keeping up DDNS, for me - my servers. I do not want to change my DDNS service since then many devices need to be reconfigured to the new DDNS - I prefer to reconfigure just one device to my DDNS.

Why not add Custom DDNS field with embedded inadyn? It would need only 3 fileds: checkip-url, server-url and server-name. OK, probably also for turning on ssl and period.

Entware on Asus router can be used only with external USB memory. This presents a terrible problem, as my recent power outage demonstrated: my external USB stick dissapeared until it was manually fixed. Therefore, I consider Entware to be unacceptable solution for anyone who demands 24/7 unattended operation.

Is it possible to add inadyn manually, to the local memory, without external USB? Or, could it be integrated into the Asuswrt-Merlin fw (without GUI connection) so it can be used manually, but without installing it using entware? It is 40KB!

For those not familiar with inadyn: it is a small piece of open source code resolving double NAT and using any DDNS service with ease, very simple to configure, handles cron (how often it will check the address) automatically, uses HTTPS to connect to the DDNS service provider, all from one simple and clear config file.

Now, since I must make one of my Asus routers work with twodns.de, I am off figuring it out :)

Hmm, If I can find compiled version, could I save it to the Router and use it? Quick look found me inadyn-mt Linux executable.

I will have to check docs as I do not know this version, but I expect I should only have to add it to autostart script, chron should not be needed.

Without knowing source code for router, I believe adding custom could be (too large?) trouble to maintain. But still, my bolded statement should be simple to implement, and asks for almost no maintenance except, embedding a file.

Just install it with Entware, no need to add it in the firmware IMO

Entware insists on USB disk. In my other post I described how my Asus Router lost USB connection after power outage. That means: no Entware of whatever is on that USB disk. Therefore, I do not want to use Entware.

Sorry I did not read your other posts, I got some power outages and never got any problems with my usb disk and i'm sure i'm not the only one.

How long do your power outages last? I have my router, modem, and server hooked up to a UPS that can easily go 30+ minutes with an idle load. If this is an important feature for you, perhaps picking up a reliable UPS would be the simplest way to go.

My UPS lasted some 6-7 hours. It is VERY reliable. But, it is not endless :)

This never happened before, but realizing this problem, USB stick in an Asus router for me is something I do not want to use.

My systems must work unatended. If left without power, they must boot to full working service on thir own. Zero tolerance. What messes up, goes to scrap.
