I'm at a loss for what to do at this point...
I live in a 6 story condo surrounded by other 3-6 story condos. I'm on the fifth floor, in a corner. I have 1150 sq ft in a very square shaped unit. My den/office with all my tech gear is in one far corner, and my living room is in the opposite corner.
The problem is that periodically my wifi seems to suffer from significant interference, and my RSSI levels drop off, and my speedtest.net reports (as a proxy for LAN throughput) plummet to under 1 mbps in my living room instead of the usual 60-70. (A computer that is wired to my router doesn't show this on the speedtest.net reports, which means I can't blame Comcast for this one, unfortunately.)
I have a Netgear R6700v2, and separated SSIDs for 2.4/5 GHz. All devices that support it know only about the 5G network. It's really only my Sonos speakers that use 2.4.
My router is set to choose its channel automatically. It seems to change whenever it gets rebooted, so I'm somewhat reluctant to fix the channel. Any time I use tools to scan, they always recommend different channels.
This problem occurs infrequently, but just frequently enough that when it does happen it's a bit maddening. When it happens, all my devices are (2.4 and 5) are affected.
Because of the layout of my condo, relocating the router to a more central place is not possible.
I have tried using an extender and a second AP, but because my condo isn't that huge (only 1150 sq ft, roughly 30 something feet x 30 something ft), I found they create more problems with the signals not dropping enough for my devices to roam smoothly. As I moved between rooms, they would stick on the original AP even though I was closer to a different AP.
As I write this in my den/office a few feet from the router, my 5G network signal is -43 and noise is -93. My router, by default, is using a 80mhz width. My signals are never terrific in the living room, but most of the time I still get solid enough throughput that it's not a problem.
What should I do? I assume it's random interference, but I don't know from what or why. When it does happen, it lasts for 15-30 minutes, and then it's fine again. It's not always convenient to drop what I'm doing to go and spend time trying to figure out what's going on. Is my router bad or overheating or something? I'm stumped.
Thanks.
