I see not why that file is not created if your output actually contained domains. Did it?

They are all there but opt/share/diversion/list/yt_blacklist dosent contain anything - its 0 bytes - is this correct?

Good to hear. I'm still tweaking some parameters as my iPads and browsers occasionally do.
This is still a work in progress. I silently pushed an update hours ago to fix that damn double count when IPv6 is enabled.
But for further tweaks I'll let you all know when I do.

I hope you bake in an ipv6 aware version for the host file as well, or the youtube ad redirect will only work part of the time for those who run the ipv6. (basically for every ipv4 repeat the same entries for ipv6).

What browser are you watching youtube videos from. Also are you using any custom dns settings in these browsers which might be diverting you away from using diversion?
