it's AP only, not a router. it's the 637 though.

Oh yeah you can't use that! Do this backup the config of the ESR9850. Save it your HDD. re-flash the firmware to 1.10. See if that works. You can always downgrade the firmware back to 1.09.The link to 1.09 is in this tread.

2 RDP2 192.168.0.11 3389 BOTH 3390

Make sure port 3389 is not used in Port Trigger or Port Mapping functions, or it may cause a conflict between settings. Best to disable these for now.

Use Port Forwarding only
Don't use IP filter

Also, make sure that each public port is only forwarded to one internal LAN.
The below will not work.

eg:
192.168.0.10 3389 BOTH 3389
192.168.0.11 3390 BOTH 3389

Port mapping is turned off. IP filter is allowing all ports to those machines, but I have tried with it off. And you have it backwards - I am using different public ports to the same local port on different machines. 3389 router to 3389 local machine #1, 3390 router to 3389 local machine #2.

The port forwarding settings you have should be fine.
Don't know why it doesn't work for you. Maybe you can send your config file to EnGenius for them to take a look.

I have port forwarding running for FTP, BitTorrent, RealVNC, eMule, IP Camera and Slingbox all without problems.

I've mention this to EnGenius, router might not be able to perform this take since this is geared for home users only and current firmware is design to be easy to use. I wanted them to make the ESR9850 as smart router. It can be done with firmware.

The 5-ports would be able to change port speed 10, 100, 1000, so that's been rejected. Their business routers have the feature though Oh well.

I'm sure forwarding remote desktops ports is no problem for this router.
Should be no different from forwarding any other port.

Changing LAN port speed is typically not a feature of Soho routers.
but if you want it, you can control it on it on the computer side.

I upgraded firmware and still can't get it to work. I tried it both by resetting to factory defaults after the upgrade, using the new internal IP it gave me (since my static DHCP wasn't set up in a factory defaults - and yes, I released and renewed the client) and also by restoring my settings (again, released and renewed). No go. I think I'm going to have to return this router.

Edit: Settings:

Wireless:
-Radio tried both ways.

Firewall:
-Firewall tried both ways
-PPTP & IPSec passthrough on (default)
-DMZ tried for the local machine, and also tried off
-DoS detection off
-MAC filter off
-IP filter tried off and also on but allowing all ports to the local machines in question
-URL filter off

Advanced:
-NAT Enabled
-Port mapping - tried
-Port forwarding - tried alone and with port mapping as well
-Port trigger disabled
-ALG all disabled
-QoS disabled
-UPnP tried both ways

I told them, that's the answer I got. But it should work. The Web GUI is design to make it less complex. So a lot of features are not there. Maybe with DD-WRT on this box then you can get into VLAN and after features usually disabled in the stock firmware. To me this should work no matter what, but whose to say otherwise?

I've always liked DD-WRT and OpenWRT but the Netgear + DD-WRT review makes me doubt DD-WRT. Hopefully it's just not that stellar on that particular router.

DD-WRT on WHR-HP-G54 was the best. I would flash and forget it. That could run for months well as AP as a router it stinks! As uploads were stronger than downloads go figure. DD-WRT from my experience was awful for TX got so much errors they didn't know what to do on DD-WRT forum. I can't get that on TEW-652BRP trying to flash that wasn't that fun.

I set up Untangle again on an old laptop and forwarded the port in that and it's working great. I sent Engenius an email but they have not responded. I think I'm going to have to return the 9850, though, if I can't figure it out on that. If I can figure this issue out then I will likely keep it as a backup.

Oh.. did you try enable UPnP? not sure if that will work... but doesn't hurt to try.

Yeah, I tried it. No helpy. Very easy to get working in Untangle and every other router I've ever had. (multiple Linksys models with several different third party firmwares, a Gateworks setup, etc.)

Has to be the firmware then with Untangle. But 9850 does a very good job blocking. Why are you using Untangle? Oh well. Everything here is working. I think I can now activate the main router as AP for those devices that can't reach the basement family room wireless well have a better signal.

Wow, I just read through the entire thread but I think I am more confused now than when I started :( I need advice, can you help Tipstir?

I have pretty simple needs:

I have a 50/50mbps fiberoptic connection, and a home server that runs a lot of P2P (bittorrent) a lot of the time. Ideally I want a router that can handle QoS for the full 50mbps up and down so I can get good performance if i play games or use VoIP even when the server is trying to max out the upstream/downstream with bitorrent traffic.

Other than that I just need a half-decent wireless connection that will not be used very heavily - maybye streaming a few movies over the network now and then. It needs to be pretty stable, but I obviously don't stress them as much as you do in your setup. There is no repeaters or DNS relaying (this 9850 will be the main router connected to the PPPoE directly and DHCPing the rest ofthe network). I only have a single central router for the network and a few clients who occationally use the WLAN mostly for light traffic.

Oh, and I don't want to spend a LOT of money on it... :p Thats why the 9850 seems so tempting. Super speed for low cost = win?...

Can the 9850 handle the QoS on such a fast connection? Is this a good idea or should I be looking at some other hardware?

I am pretty technical but I just never worked with networks of your size/complexity, so I dont know if most of the problems you experience will apply for my use. I just need a damn fast router that does good QoS and a decent pretty-stable WLAN for a good price.

Thanks to anyone who can give me advice :)

Sincerely
-Stigma

PS: I am familiar with DD-WRT and prefer router that have DD-WRT support, but I can get a fast enough QoS router for this low a price then I don't mind too much if the tradeoff is that it might not get DD-WRT support. I am also open to suggestions of other routers.

Just get ESR-9850 more than enough for what you need. Price is dirt cheap, and that's how this company wants to be more affordable buy yet give you a router that can peform very well. Now if you need more Qos/Gaming then you should consider the ESR-9855 cost $50 bucks more. ESR-9850 is $50 bucks less. Around $50 with free shipping. Just have to look for the vendor online.

Don't worry so much about DD-WRT when the stock firmware from Senao (EnGenius) is more than enough since it already tweaked out of the box. I use do download heavy not anymore. This router have thrown everything I could think at it and it still can take it the beating on it. I would like a few changes to the firmware, but the System Engineer at Senao won't change the firmware, but it's okay I understand why they won't. I have both of these routers one AP the other DHCP main running neck to neck. I've even check for overheating nope not even warm. They are bright though with the lights flashing on them so be warned.

Ok thanks for the help.

But you didn't really answer if 9850 can handle 50/50mbps with QoS. Do you know, or haven't you tested the troughput with QoS on?

In an earlier post it is said the throughput is 2-300mbps when QoS is enabled. That just seems like a LOT compared to other routers I have tried so I just want to make sure I am not misunderstanding it.

Tippy -

I finally settled for the ESR9850. Just made an order from Hongkong, so should get it within a week i suspect. The price was dirt cheap and the performance outdid many including WNDR3700 that costs 3 times as much.

I am not too worried about the weak wireless from your reviews since i don't use wireless much if at all.

Tipy i will have to rely on your guidance how to set this router up >:x
