Hi,

Another weird question, my WAN port on the latest version of Merlin is reporting the following when running ethtool:

ASUSWRT-Merlin RT-AC5300 380.68-0 Fri Aug 18 21:41:42 UTC 2017
ACamus1978@RT-AC5300-B6F0:/tmp/home/root# ethtool eth0
Settings for eth0:
Supported ports: [ ]
Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
Supported pause frame use: No
Supports auto-negotiation: Yes
Advertised link modes: Not reported
Advertised pause frame use: No
Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes
Speed: 10Mb/s
Duplex: Full
Port: Twisted Pair
PHYAD: 0
Transceiver: internal
Auto-negotiation: on
MDI-X: Unknown

The network cable, wan port and port it is connected to at the ONT are all gigabit but the router's WAN port is set to 10 Mbps.

Something is off, is this a bug or does anyone have any ideas. The ethernet cable supports 1000 Mbps as demonstrated on two of my other routers.

Thanks,

J

Auto negotiation is notorious for not working on MANY switches/routers. Try forcing it to 100base/full on both sides (assuming you have access to the ONT?).

Wouldn't hurt to try another cable as well. Sometimes they are just weird and will work on one port/switch but not another.

Another weird question, my WAN port on the latest version of Merlin is reporting the following when running ethtool:
What speed does it report in the router's GUI.

I'd be more suspicious that ethtool isn't working properly. Your router has a gigabit WAN interface and yet ethtool is saying the maximum possible link speed is 100baseT/Full.

Hi,

The interface says gigabit, but the weird thing is all my speedtests are way below what I should be getting. It seems like after two or three reboots things go from 800-900 Mbps down to less than 100 Mbps (up and down). I am provisioned for Gigabit internet and on the other routers I tested (not using Merlin but DD-WRT, I am getting around 500 or more on average), the FIOS router gets a solid 950/950.

I honestly have no clue what's going on. I have reinstalled, am hardwired to the router, did a complete overhaul of the router with erasing the nvram, reuploading the firmware and then repeating a clean cycle. i also did an upload with the restoration utility, i simply cannot get the speeds up. I am not running QOS and I am at a loss.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

J

try placing a switch between the router and modem. I had instances in the past where router and modem didn't play nice with each others and by placing a switch between them, I was able to make them. This might or might not be such a case

Ordered a switch yesterday and it should be here today. I appreciate the suggestion and will follow up with the outcome.
