New Around Here
Hello all,

I am hoping someone can help me out. I recently purchased an AC68U and suddenly last night I started having an issue with it.

Last night the internet just cut out. I thought it was a Comcast issue, but after testing the modem and talking to an agent my modem is fine. Internet works when directly attached to it and the internet phone is working fine.

My ASUS router seems to be working for all but the internet. All clients can connect, the USB drive is accessible, it has pulled an external WAN IP address etc.. but still nothing connected to it (WIFI or wire) can access the internet.

I have tried rebooting it, resetting it to factory, flashed Merlin, flashed most recent Asus firmware (currently still running it) and still no internet.

I am no networking guru by any means, so I am hoping someone can help me out with other things to try before I send it back.

Thank you in advance!

In the WAN settings of the router, make sure enable NAT and connect to DNS server automatically are enabled.

If the router is getting an IP from your ISP and all your internal devices can talk to each other and communicate with the router but not able to get out on the internet, sounds like NAT is disabled.

Thanks for the reply. Not sure what happened, but suddenly its working. I didn't even do anything. I'll check the NAT settings if it happens again.

If it happens again, do an 'ipconfig /all' (windows) to make sure that DNS addresses are being assigned (which is why I suggested the DNS server setting). By default, the router will grab DNS server addresses during the DHCP process and tell the clients behind the router to use the router as the DNS resolver (192.168.1.1). If you want to use other name servers and have your clients connect directly to them, put in valid name server addresses in the DHCP section of the LAN config of the router.

I have Comcast, sometimes they have "drops" in the DNS servers. My internet has frozen because a name could not be resolved, take like 1-2 seconds and then it's working again but not had it be down over night.
True, router gets the DNS from the WAN and broadcasts it out to devices to use router as DNS
And also Comcast will "not" be so helpful all the time when you have your own modem/router setup as you are not paying them $7-$9 rental a month for a Arris eMTA box......
You could always disable DNS on the router and use
8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4
as the DNS servers.
Those are Google public DNS'es and they work great

Thanks again for the replies..

I did check DNS when this was happening and released / renewed / rebooted the computers, tablets, TV's etc.. in addition to rebooting the router, modem and resetting the router to factory.

This is still bothering me. The external IP and DNS information is exactly the same as it was when the internet was not accessible. Last night under normal use (Streaming video content, tablets, phones and computers) it cut out again but only briefly. Maybe 1 - 2 minutes. I flashed merlin (Beta 2) back on the router last night to see if that makes any difference.

I will keep an eye on it hopefully I will have no more issues, but I hate when I can't figure out why it happened in the first place.

Again thank you for the help!

If you really want to rule out DNs problem, just try to ping something on the internet by IP address like google DNS server (8.8.8.8) from either the router or a computer and see if the ping go through and also if you notice any drops.

you can do unlimited ping with the command:

ping 8.8.8.8 -t

Do this from the DOS prompt on your computer. Check to see if you get a reply back and if you notice any "drops". Let it run for a few minutes to get a good idea. If you notice no drops and good reply, then you may have a DNS issue. Try changing your DNS as suggested by someone to use Google public DNS:

primary: 8.8.8.8
secondary: 8.8.4.4

Your user id says it all as to why you are having problems.....

Comcast does NOT make it easy for people to drop their services.

I was ready to drop mine a month ago because the bill was $85 then $95 then $103 (I dropped triple play, got a Ooma Telo w/premier for 14 months for home phone for a total cost of $99 for device and $99 for 1 yr premier (you get 2 months free) so I did NOT have to use Crapcast mETA DOCSIS 2.0 cable/telephony box and pay a $9 month rental+the charge for the phone service)
Anyway after packing up the 2 HD boxes, 2 SD boxes (which used to be free but now charge $1.99/month each) I went to Crapcast center here in MIAMI, there is like ONLY ONE in Kendall.
Anyway they clicked here and clicked there and now I pay $95/mo w/tax for cable (with all the boxes) and internet Blast at 25/5 (I get 33/8)
Just for internet alone would have been about $75/month
I bought my own Motorola SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0 modem (the WHITE ONE, if it's is black it is a RE-MANUFACTURED one from overseas). Only the white ones are new/retail.
I bet you are having a cable drop and your line needs to be "re provisioned" and also the firmware in the cable modem needs to be updated (again if the already have) by Comcast.
Next thing is on the outside of your residence. Is the cable connection rained on?
How many SPLITTERS do you have on the cable from the STB (the green box sticking out of the ground) or over head wire run?
The feed to the cable modem should only have at most 1 splitter (dual 5Ghz on up broadband capable)
you could use this, I have one BUT I have it on the TV feeds coming inside, the wire to the modem is from 1 dual splitter from the STB, so my signals are good.

Also do you have a straight run from cable outside hookup to the cable modem?
The number of times the signal is broken (connectors, splitters, etc) then things like humidity (at night) can cause more SNR in the line and you modem will disconnect.
I had to have a new cable run in the townhouse, thru the attic, down the wall and terminate with 10 extra feet from the outlet so I could move the modem when moving furniture, etc.
This improved the connection, so the amplifier is used on the HD tv's only. I still have some 20 year old cable in the walls and the resistance on the wire would override the digital signal to the tv's or modem.
Again, this is the SNR
Someone on the phone can not diagnose the problem because they never worked in the field, so in other words, they don't anything that is not on a script they read from.

Haha I didn't read your full post yet, but you are absolutely right! I have had so many issues after I dropped their cable TV (over $200.00). Canceling the service was a week long event. What a joke.

I have had to be "re-provisioned" several times. I am on my 3rd modem with them in the last 6 months due to constantly having to reboot the modems. Had their wireless gateway for a while, but that was a pile of junk which is why I now have the AC68.

Now that I have no TV's or boxes connected to cable my cable line is a direct one straight from outside to the modem. I have the 50/10 plan and usually get well over 60 down and 20 up, so when its working its great.

Last night I switched over to Google DNS so we'll see how it goes.

Thanks again for all the help much appreciated.

Yes, if you are still having problema tell the you want a NETWORK technician/tier 2 (the guys that drive the trucks with the "buckets" on them, the real, climb up a pole kinda guy) to come and check the line from you connection on the outside of your house back to the nearest repeater. Tell them you insist this be done, because to me, sounds like a open/loose connection, with variables like humidity/rain or the alignment of the planets :p
