How to extract images and GUI content from Asus Firmware File

I love doing design and I want to test working with router firmware imaging. What is the best way to extract the .trx firmware files so I can modify the images and overall layout of the Asus firmware interface. I want to change the way it looks in simpler terms.

You can open the .trx files as an archive using 7-Zip.

Make a local git repository of the firmware by cloning Merlin's git....

The gui code is in
release/src/router/www
