Internal copy on DNS-321 possible?

I have a D-Link DNS 321 NAS (2 bays, 2TB each) and I need to shuffle about 1TB of data. It will take literally days to copy data over network. Is there a way to move data internally between drives?

If no, is it supported by D-Link DNS 323? Is it supported by more expensive NASes? Is it considered a "premium" feature?

There is no built-in way that I know of.

Some NASes like the QNAPs, Synology and NETGEAR provide a web file interface where you could do what you want.

You could do it if you're willing to install freeware on your NAS and are comfortable with typing Unix commands at a shell. Look for ffp at http://wiki.dns323.info

Be aware that the DNS-321 will want to format any drive that you put in which may or may not be what you want.

As for network transfer performance, I get about 14MB/s.

I enabled telnet on my LG N4B1 NAS. See http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/showthread.php?t=4575.

I recently tried some direct copying. I plugged in an eSata drive. It mounted partition 1, but I really wanted the second one. So I telneted to the box and umounted the first one, /dev/sde1, and mounted /dev/sde2 on the same mount point.

I have tried some copying, both with the web interface and in telnet using cp. In either case it is very slow, taking hours to copy a few hundred GB.

I also tried a USB drive. It's even worse. The NAS loses the mount and I have to re-mount the drive.

There is a way

I have a DNS-321 too.

Go to the web interface.

Enter your credentials and click "Applications"

Use the "Scheduled Download" feature.

As long as drives are in standard, you should have a Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 available.

If you are transferring a folder, be sure to select folder instead of file in the drop down. If you don't, it won't transfer.

The speed will be determined by your drives, but at 1 TB it will still take some time.
