Please see screenshots attached... works fine for me.

Once suggestion: under server address, you need to insert the one you prefer to connect (i.e. fastest speed or geographical location)

Pls. let me know it worked for you.

Thanks Sky1111. Will try this the first chance I get. Really appreciate the effort.

I tried the config, and the openvpn connection seems to connect, but then I loose my connection. Not sure what happens, but the following entries are found in the log:

Million apologies - there is a missed step!!!!

There is a certificate to be insert on a different page:

- Go to "OpenVPN Keys
- Under "Certificate Authority" you need to copy/paste a key

How to get the key: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/client-support/
CA Certificate: Download this zip file:
https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/openvpn/openvpn.zip
and extract the ca.crt file
Open it with notepad, and then copy paste to that above mentioned window.

Sorry again - completely forgot about this step...

No worries, I had the correct certificate pasted into the client1 certificate authority field allready. :). Still the same log result. The strange thing is that the connection seems to be active (ref: http://snag.gy/cp9AC.jpg) , but I'm no longer able to access any websites.

OK, let's try to confirm few things (please kindly reply to each line):

- you did power cycle your modem and the router (modems are evil - just a feature by design :))
- with VPN Client OFF on the router, you can connect to Internet (obviously)
- with VPN Client OFF on the router, you can run PIA client on a PC and connects to both PIA server and you can browse Internet on that system
- with VPN Client ON on the router, the PC which does NOT have PIA installed, you are connected to the router, but cannot access to Internet

NOTE: even if you uninstall the PIA client from PC, you may still need to run network troubleshooter (built-in into Windows) to re-enable DHCP and possibly other setting PIA messes up.

I suggest to download the latest version of the network driver - I personally gone thru scenario where no matter what I do I could not get Internet working on a specific system where I had PIA installed, uninstalled the NIC driver, reboot, installed it back - and it worked! (not saying it is necessary this case here, but who knows)

Thanks for your suggestions. I've verified all the steps above, but no luck. Looks like the vpn connection with pia just doesn't route things correctly. The pc client is functioning perfect, but no luck with the router client. Too bad the logs doesn't show more details.

Perhaps Merlin or someone else with more knowledge than either of us can help here?

Have you tried PIA tech support?

Dirobaro, post a screenshot of your OpenVPN settings so folks will be able to look over them. It's possible that you missed a single option required for this to properly work.

I've attached a screenshot of my settings. If anyone see any mistakes, please let me know.

Hi there!
Not sure if it is going to help, but please try to change server address from IP to a name like us-east.privateinternetaccess.com

full list of servers: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/network/

The reason I say that - I noticed that even I stay on the same East US server, my external IP does changes periodically - I think PIA re-routes the traffic between their servers, so assigning an IP address to PIA server may not be the best idea. Please try that and let us know...

Thanks for making this thread! It tried it on my AC66U and the sysinfo says 1200mHz, but running cat /proc/cpuinfo shows:

system type : Broadcom BCM5300 chip rev 1
processor : 0
cpu model : MIPS 74K V4.9
BogoMIPS : 299.82

I'm assuming this doesn't work for the AC66U? :)

Sorry, but N66U/AC66U CPU seems to be locked at 600MHz (that's per CPU spec)...

I tried using the name based address, but no luck. I did however notice something quite strange. If I establish a vpn connection between a machine on the lan and pia, it will keep the machine connected even after the router vpn connection is activated. Hence, all the other machines will loose their connection to the net, but the one with an active vpn connection established before the router vpn client was turned on, will keep on going. Doesn't even have to be the same pia server. I used the one in netherland for the local machine and sweden for the router client, and the connection with the pia server in netherland kept on going. I've tried sending pia a support request, and hopefully they have some clever troubleshooting technique...

OK we are getting somewhere...
- I strongly suggest to stay with name for PIA server vs. specific IP address
- yes, I have seen the same behavior - machine on network connected to PIA and it stays connected after router connects to VPN. I would not worry but you are getting major speed drop thru double VPN
- I start suspecting that something is not right on your network. Can you please double check the network adapter settings?
- anything different from default settings? like static IP addresses, DNS servers, etc? If you were trying PIA on a system, it will mess up your network...
- on the router - anything else changes - like DNS server, etc.

Too bad stock firmware you cant adjust the cpu settings. I would prefer to have it run at what the chip is rated for(1ghz).

Back with my Cisco e series routers...I did notice a slight performance bump when overclocking it when using tomato firmware.

This Asus is plenty fast as it is....(though I really wish Tomato or Padavan was available for it)

I use VPN through my Sever 2012 Essentials system. Its a HP SFF box, core2Quad, 8gb ram....and I max out my upload speed with it(20meg)...I did try VPN through the routers built in feature, but it wasn't as fast...(mine uses SSTP and the Asus uses PPTP...not sure what the differences are)

Unless you set "Redirect Internet Traffic" to "Yes", then nothing will automatically get routed through the tunnel.

It appears that in order to run at stock 1GHz, active cooling is required - as indicated on Netgear R7000 thread, it looks like Netgear did install small fans...

I have a PCI slot cooler style fan stuck to the back of my AC56u...spliced to a 6v ac adapter. Quite...and definitely helps cooling...

Yes!! This put me on the right track. I started digging around in other settings on the router and modem. Turned out the modem was causing the problems. After telneting into the modem and entering some settings which I haven't got a clue what means, things started working. Thanks Sky1111 for putting me on the right track :D
