just wondering how many people would buy a gt-5300 if merlin decided to support it, keep in mind this is just me being qurious, about who else other than my self would buy one if the senario stated above was true.

we need alot of yes votes, if its popular enough mabe we could convince him, id literally save the money it costs to buy one and purchase it the day support was real.

As I said before, it's not a matter of money. That model isn't as frequently updated by Asus, therefore half of the time I wouldn't even be able to compile a firmware for that model, because the code used by Asuswrt-Merlin would be newer and therefore incompatible with older binary blobs for that model.

ahh kk so should we poke asus to support it more, so that theres like a better chance of making it feasble

yup, poke asus to keep their asus wrt for all their routers updated, except for some models like the ac87U which bottlenecks itself internally for the high performance asus has been known for.
The other thing is that i want a working software repository for asus routers, not only to make my own asus routers more useful and also more useful per watt but also it'd give me a chance to develop software for it too.

this makes me want to go do programming so i could handle thw obscure units, i think if more people helped ot wpuld be easier for merlin?

Really comes down to his time - the SDK on that device is fairly different from the core devices that Eric supports with RMerlin-AsusWRT

RMerlin is not a full-time employee of Asus - be mindful of his time, and his contributions.

I am I just wanted to kindly ask asus enough to make it easier for him that's all.

fair enough - many of the devices he supports - it's on his dime - Asus kicking over a demo/not for resale unit would help there - but then it's still the issue of time and effort on his part.

One must understand that it's a completely new chipset, and many parts of the code are entirely new, and it's not a simple effort to bring things over from the older code base.

And FWIW - I was one that said "NO" - as it's not up to the community...

I'm 100% aware just wanted to do what I could to help.

I only posted this out of sheer curiosity, I've always wondered ever since the unit came out.

All good... just understand that it's non-trivial - RMerlin's builds are very reliable, and it's a fair amount of work to get there.

I've already had this talk with merlin, just to clarify, the whole purpose was to gauge how popular the unit would be if there was support, since merlin stated one of the reasons he chose the 86u was popularity he determined that it would be a more popular unit. I'm aware of the reasons that he's not interested in supporting the unit.

I find this very frustrating. I recently purchased a 5300 because I thought it was their top of the line model and would therefore receive all the goodies as early any other models. Sigh! I "upgraded" from a 3200 which also seems to be getting ignored. I've always really appreciated the work RMerlin has done so I don't want this to sound like any kind of complaint towards him because it is absolutely not intended to be. It is just me expressing my frustration about continually buying ASUS routers that seem to be high end models and getting dumped.

I'm moving to another brand, probably the top end Netgear. I will probably be disappointed with that too somehow but it's time to do something different. If that doesn't work out I'll buy something else. Cost is not an issue for me, I just want the best, fastest hardware money can buy in consumer grade hardware.

In the beginning, I was drooling over this router and would've bought one. But the 400 tag was a huge kick in the gut. Then no Merlin support made it an auto no buy for me and my friends who use Merlin themselves and were eyeing this model. Third, was the fact that the GT-5300 still seems to have major issues software wise, turning a otherwise promising unit into junk. And I'm not in position or mood to tinker these days.

Fourth, you consider Merlin dove into 86U development as fast as he could and it's proved to be a nice piece of kit for the price. I'd be buying one of those instead and recommending that to any who need a upgrade.

Sad to see such a router pushed aside by the manufacturer. Still, maybe in another 4-6 years after my then new 86U is in need of replacement, there will be another GT series that Merlin will support and will blow the current model away.

I'm after that router mainly because of the USB performance, but won't touch it due to the reported stability issues. I'm assuming that would be fixed through Merlin.
