Today I reset my router to defaults and reconfigured it and noticed something weird. I have an XP and a Win 7 machine that I use to access the rmerlin GUI. Call me crazy, but the GUI is quite a bit faster loading on IE 8 than on IE 11.

It seems to be especially noticeable when using the VPN sub tabs, for some reason. On IE 11 it can be quite slow. Has anyone else noticed this, and if not, can anyone else confirm it? :D

Can't confirm it, but ie8 is a light weight and stripped down ie11.

Test it with FF and Chrome.

I have used chrome and firefox as well, but when I'm getting down to brass tacks (firmware updates/etc) I use IE. Chrome works ok as does firefox.

Maybe I will move on and try to use firefox for awhile. It seems to do quite a bit better than IE 11.

I just find it so odd that IE 8 whoops IE 11 so soundly at the GUI!!! I thought I supercharged my router as I was setting it up (on IE 8) but then was brought back to reality when I logged in with IE 11. Hehe.

Just remember that IE8 is considered far less secure, and is becoming far less compatible with web sites than IE9 or later.

I found IE10 to be an abomination in the corporate environment. I keep IE9 on most of our gear, and IE11 is a better choice if it is compatible with your websites, but isn't always. I would definitely not keep IE8 because a page or two loaded faster; it may just mean there are elements designed for newer browsers, kind of like a DirectX 11 game will run faster in DirectX 9 mode because there are elements that aren't supported and are therefore turned off.

His machine running IE8 is Windows XP so he has no choice if he wants to use IE.

True. I use chrome or firefox for web browsing on an XP box. But now my rmerlin GUI access is strictly IE 8. It is just so much faster than IE 11 or chrome for this specific task that I can't bear to wait for the pages to load on IE 11 when there is a much quicker option available. :D First world problems.

I use Chrome and Firefox and was just thinking there was something wrong with my browser as both lag very badly accessing the router GUI

Well, if you have access to IE 8 it will be lightning fast by comparison, most likely. The difference is big, big enough that I daresay something is definitely off.

It is not just the lag, but in other browsers GUI pages will "half load" and stop a lot, necessitating reloading the page. I am pretty sure I have never seen this happen in IE 8.

I have recently been diagnosing some weird issues with IE11.

IE11 is faster at display processing. so eg. scrolling a youtube page is smoother and fastert than it is on IE9. It can process javascript faster and so on. However it's background tasks seem more bloated and I have an issue in particular with idle background tabs, on IE9 if I leave IE running with say 40 tabs the cpu usage will be almost 0. On IE11 it frequently is 20-35% which on a haswell is stupid. I think the cause is background jaava tasks which plague many modern websites, freofix rate limits these in background tabs, so does chrome, amd on firefox the rate limit is adjustable, on IE11 there is no rate limit, whilst I suspect on IE9 there was.

IE11 according to a microsoft blog post supposedbly suspends idle background tabs, but I have never seen it happen. So this could be a reason if there is many tabs open.

Be warned that there are a few compatibility issues between IE8 and Asuswrt which Asus have been struggling with for a while now. They are even considering advising people to avoid using IE8 in case those compatibility issues cannot be fully resolved.

Sorry, I don't have any additional details as to the nature of those compatibility issues.

Hhaha... too funny. You would think that any issues would be with the browser that is slow and clunky- but we are not so lucky.

Since I dual boot XP and Win 8.1....

Tested IE8, IE11 and Firefox.

All the same speed at loading the GUI and navigation for me.

Perhaps you have different add-ons in IE11 then you do in IE8 which are slowing things down.

KevTech, could you browse through the vpn sub tabs on IE8 and IE11 and let me know?

For some weird reason, for me that is where IE11 is much much slower than IE8 (especially vpn details tab). I don't really use add-ons on IE since I really rarely use it, but I will check those out.

Addition- I tried completely resetting IE 11. Now it is well... much worse. Practially unusable, really. Weird. I'll keep looking.
