I have this router and the explanation was that this branch is not being updated as often by ASUS anymore and Merlin depends on that. He doesn't have resources to backport features from new branches back to one used by this router.

I can't, because it's not a black-or-white thing. Just that in general, I will only apply bugfixes, and some components updates. It will not receive any newer GPL code, so any bug fixes of new features Asus added will not be backported.

You will have to look at the changelog to see the differences, both release branches are documented separately.
