If you are on Firmware version 3.0.0.4.378.5134 do you still have to do a hard reset? it mentions if you you were on build 5556 that you didn't.

Any firmware version previous to 5556 must have a hard reset and reconfigure it all again manually (not using the cfg file).
If you already are on 5556 or newer and upgrade to 5587, then you don't need a hard reset

I tried this firmware, but after initial config, it got stuck every time I 'Applied settings' - the % never appeared - did 2 hard resets and no joy - back to 4950 now and it seems ok for now - anyone else have that ?

As I mentioned before, I was having that issue and resolved it by re-applying firmware into the router. Does it makes sense? No, but it worked for me. Give a try, you have nothing to lose.
Then hard reset and put all settings manually again as you do normally, don't use de cfg file (just in case I always clarify)

Well I try and still fails, the version displayed on the web interface is 3.0.0.4.378_5587 for the file RT-AC87U_3.0.0.4_378_5587-g7912572.trx coming from the link.

A new beta build should be available soon apparently. Otherwise, I guess I could test it with build 378_5886 which was compiled only two days ago (that build was for testing a different issue, which was fixed in this build).

It's not always necessary. In this case it is, because it's specified in the original post from JK, in part due to the new Broadcom SDK used in this beta build.

What I usually do for these cases where I just want to test a new FW is I save a backup of my settings. Then I flash the new firmware, do a factory default reset, and reconfigure only the basics. I test what i need tested, and once done I reflash the original firmware, and then I restore my saved settings.

Did a factory reset with 3.0.0.4.378_5587, WPS still buggy with '12345670' . The only firmware that fixed the WPS issue was the one I posted in the WPS issue thread http://www.snbforums.com/posts/181485/

Did a factory reset with 3.0.0.4.378_5587, WPS still buggy with '12345670' . The only firmware that fixed the WPS issue was the one I posted in the WPS issue thread http://www.snbforums.com/posts/181485/

Maybe someone forgot to merge it in master (or the fix got accidentally overwritten at some point - that's what happened with the smb issue a year or two ago).

I'll see what I get from this newer internal beta once I get the chance to test it.

Well, I can't test it. Both my Android tablet come back with "Another WPS session is in progress, try again in a few minutes", and my Windows 10 laptop was immediately reconnecting without asking any PIN once I press the "Start" button on the webui, even after I told it to forget my network...
