Hello guys!

First of all, I have to congratulate the great community that this forum has. There's some really great people here helping and giving advice. Thank you for that.

My thread here is about the RT-N56U that should be arriving at my door tomorrow or the next day to replace a NetGear N300 WNR2200 wireless router that I had before.

Basically, it did a very poor job. But I suspect it was due to the fact that I live in a place where on a normal day I can see around 40 WiFi signals around me, bringing a lot of interference to the mix.

This made the signal strength drop to 50% just 10 ft away from the router itself and when moving to the next room it came all the way down to 20-25% strength (I used iStumbler for Mac to analyse the signal).

I hope the Asus will make a much better job, specially on the 5GHz band.

The question I wanted to ask you guys, is regarding the firmware. Should I leave the original one or upgrade to something else?

The devices connected to the router will be:
- 2 MacBooks
- 2 iPhones
- 1 iPad
- 1 HDD via USB for Time Machine and Media Server

Thank you all.

For me using the Beta 206 allows my iPhone to receive push notification on Wi-Fi only. So I would defiantly upgrade to the beta firmware. They are better than the official one in my opinion and I can really verify this I have over a 3 month using it.

I've been extremely pleased with Padavan's Custom Firmware on both of my RT-N56U boxes.

I just received my RT-N56U and got it up and running with the latest official Asus firmware.

WiFi 2.4 and 5 are up as you can see on the attached jpg file. Network names are Ambrosio (for 2.4) and Ambrosio5 (for 5). I expected a stronger signal since I am less than 10 feet away from the router and in the same room.

It will be a lot stronger, this router is very strong. For some reason Push does not work on the stock firmware, give it a try, for me it never worked.

I'm getting only 50 Mbps on my 5GHz network. Shouldn't I get much more than that?

802.11a?
is the client definitely running N and what other wireless clients are on at the same time (every client added lowers / divides the total effective speed from the router ((dependent on distance))
