How is the wifi range on both bands? Is it finally fixed and better then .276?
You want it even better than with 3.0.0.4.276?
For me range was never an issue with version 3.0.0.4.270 and up. For me connection issues where the problem from versions beyond 3.0.0.4.276.
I stepped back in with version 3.0.0.4.374.720 which solved the 5 GHz issues.

What were the 5GHz issues? I never had any.

After .276 my 2.4 GHz band went bad very short distance.

.270, .271 and .276 have the best for me as far as 2.4 GHz band distance.

Rmerlin this forums owner has a build called 39.0-em even stronger comparable to the ac68 wifi strength.

thiggins runs SmallNetBuilder, not me. I'm just a moderator for the Asus Wireless subforums.

270, 271, 276 where indeed the winners for long time for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
With newer versions my 5 GHz clients had problems to connect or stay connected. This was solved with the 3.0.0.4.374.720 version and up.
I never suffered 2.4 GHz (range) issues, maybe because I skipped versions between 3.0.0.4.270 and 3.0.0.4.374.720.
Through the house are various wireless clients: Win7 PC's (either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz), Playstation3 and Android phones.
The longest path for my 2.4 GHz signal (fixed to 20 MHz bandwidth and a fixed channel, 802.11n/g, WPA2/AES) is through two concrete floors, from the living room with the RT-N66U router to the second story of our home with an old WRT54GL as DD-WRT Client-Bridge for the networked / wired printer, also 802.11n at 2.4 GHz gives full throughput on a laptop at this distance.

Does the newest firmware allows the setting for the ISP to Normal instead of Aggressive ? I had the N66 about a year ago and it constantly disconnected from the ISP so I sold it. I don't recall if the firmware had that option at that time. Maybe getting another one at some point.

Yes, that was added by Asus at some point (I forgot which exact version).

4422 is also using the new timings for Charter customers (waiting for 160 secs instead of 120 secs)

Thanks for the info. Sounds good. I will then get another in the future, it was a great router besides ISP disconnect. I do have Charter so that the newest firmware fixed more stuff that is even better. Thanks again.

Anyone else seeing really bizarre daily traffic numbers with the new version?

My router is telling me yesterday I transferred 183GB of data... which isn't even possible on my connection in 24 hours.

Known issue (use search).

Known issue (use search).

Tried that, didn't find anything of relevance; mostly questions about why the logs aren't saving to USB, which seems to work fine.

Suggestions on correct terms to search for? Is there a fix for it or is it just a wait and see type deal?

Might revert my Merlin version. Seemed to work fine before.

I think RMerlin's firmware is affected too: it's Asus' code, after all.

The newest one is, but my older Merlin version I had been using wasn't. I hadn't updated in quite some time since I didn't have any problems. I put the newest Merlin version on, after dabbling with Tomato a little and not liking it. Figured I should update since I was installing firmware anyway.

I'll have to go through the features list to see what has changed since then, but it's entirely possible having a working traffic monitor outweighs the other changes. I didn't really have anything to complain about before other than QOS not gagging Iphones as successfully as I wanted it to.

Rmerlin fixed everything that was wrong with asus firmware they probably will hire him as senior software developer soon for all there products to work to 100% perfection only question is can they afford him?

I too think that RMerlin deserves that kind of position.

However, I think your posts are a little off - can't decide if you're a bot yet or a real person. :)

L2TP vs openVPN

Can someone explain to my feeble brain why on an L2TP vpn connection I achieve 25mbps (my full comcast connection speed) but with openVPN I get 8-9 mbps. I understand the rt-n66 is limited by processor but I thought openvpn was a lighter weight protocol. Is the L2TP processing handled by another chipset in the router? I just dont get why the speed difference. Any help understanding would be appreciated.
