To each their own but with the asuswrt-merlin you can do alot more than the stock firmware (Ad blocker/Unbound/Flex etc...) sometimes security fixes are done before Asus.

Asuswrt-merlin is very dependable and has been for a long time!

But I belive you would use the GNuton fw which I'm not too familiar with.

I just told my personal experience. I tried it and saw that it's not for me. Someone can disagree with me and that's ok. You said well "To each their own".

It seems you're not having any luck with the stock firmware either since you're still having some issues.

When was the last time you totally wiped this router and started again from scratch? tl;dr but I don't recall seeing it mentioned anywhere.

I do a factory reset every time after a new FW.It's 5 minutes of work for me. I love it
