What's the best go forward router for Asuswrt-Merlin?

Upgrading from my Asus AC68U. Which model is recommended for the best compatibility with Asuswrt-Merlin and longer term support? Would that be the AC88U or the AC86U? I was leaning towards the AC86U since it's on a newer platform and AFAIK @RMerlin develops on and uses that model right now.

I'd say it depends on your pocketbook. There is really nothing wrong the AC68 series for the vast majority of users. It easily keeps up with 100-200Mbps ISP speeds, especially the newer variants. Its range is as good as any, and the Merlin and John's features make it a splendid all around choice.

If, however, you just feel the need to step up, you might as well go with the AC86.
