Why no word on any new Merlin builds ?

Just wondering what the latest is on new Merlin builds been just about 2 months for most of us. Is there issues again getting GPL from Asus or are we in limbo waiting on the new 388 branch ? How about an update @RMerlin.

Merlin’s 386.7 release is using a newer GPL (386_48966) than what Asus has already released for most routers (386.48260).

Will be a while away, as Asus and I are in the planning stage for the move to 388.

Was running the AX86U beta firmware from Asus, had some issues so went back to merlin 7_2. I did like the native wireguard support tho.

I would like to see an update for the later models that reverts the IPv6 DNSFilter behavior to what it was prior to 386.7_2. I had to downgrade to 386.7_0 because IPv6 DNS bypasses DNSFilter under 386.7_2.

After multiple delays, I should hopefully be getting 388 code for two models by tomorrow.

I haven't seen the code yet, but in the past these major merges typically took me 3-4 weeks to do. So as pointed out, it will take a while.

@RMerlin - it seems you have addressed a number of firmware issues in 386.7 after release of 386.7.2 [including the DNSFilter fix above]. Are ALL of these relevant ONLY to the restricted models for which 386.8.1 has been released ??

I ask because in days gone by when similar remedial work was done by you on a released firmware version - it was possible to self compile [I use amcfwm by @Adamm ] and enjoy the benefit of those post release features.

Sadly - amcfwm and/or the source code structure in the Master ?? no longer results in successful self-compiles.

amcfwm I admittedly haven’t tested in a few months. Once all the branches are unified I’ll have another crack at getting things to compile… but the progressive changes to the build env aren’t documented so it’s a bit of a guessing game when it comes to mimicking Merlin and Asus’s setup.

People are welcome to submit pull requests though…

Remedial work done which impacted ALL models could then continue in the Master Branch - and self-compilers could update their firmware without the Maestro needing to do repeated interim update releases.

HEAD is currently only compilable for these three models due to the GPL changes. You need to checkout the 386.7_2 tag and backport any of the newer commits if you want to build for the other models.

No, that's what release tags are for. 386.8 was not a "specialist release", it was a regular release targeting only the three models for which I had GPL code for. With 19+ supported models, getting all 19 GPLs for every single release is getting unrealistic. Otherwise, I would end up with separate branches for almost every single release, and it would be a nightmare to merge commits to every single branches.

Master is where main development occurs, and that's what I have always been doing. The only exception was the early RT-AX88U days, and that's because Asus' own development was done on a separate code branch that was different from the main branch. And that was a PITA for me to manage at the time. I've always made it clear that master will never be guaranteed to be buildable for all models at all time.

There's only one branch at the moment, with 388 to be added in the near future as a separate branch.

Why not straight 388.1_2 @RMerlin next week? Make sure it has WireGuard in GUI and VPN Director integrated. Don't forget the RGB control.

There was nothing rude about it or intended. It was simply asking Merlin were things are at this point and when new releases may be coming. Nothing more nothing less. Stop over thinking this.
