I changed the wireless card in two laptops to the intel 8260 to maximize available 150mbps service. One laptop is a higher end Dell Inspiron, the other a cheap Toshiba Satellite from Walmart, both Windows 10 64bit, both windows drivers dated 3/2016. Router is an Asus RT-N66R.

The cheap Toshiba can easily make and hold 140mbps according to speedtest.net. The Dell I can't get past 60mbps. Both are testing from the same site, multiple times, sitting right next to each other 20ft from the router. I've tried different driver version, with and without the intel proset software, no luck.

Suggestions on where to look?

Thanks

Connected to 5GHz...
Was the Dell a single stream/antenna card previously? It may only have one antenna connected so 1x1 verses 2x2. What is its connection rate as showing in the router? That may tell you as well.

OK, well that's odd. It's connected 81mbps transmission 90 receive. Both antennas appear connected ok. The "cheap" toshiba, same 8160 wireless card is connected at 144. What would be driving the difference?

The "cheap" toshiba, same 8160 wireless card is connected at 144

you would not normally see a 5 gig connect sync at 144M , but you almost certainly see 144M on a 2.4 gig connection at 20mhz

take the laptops and move next to the router , what sync rate do you get then ?

intel 8260

see this adapters is

867M on 5 gig and 300M on 2.4 gig

144M on 5 gig would make it just about unusable

144M on 2.4 gig would be about max signal if the router is doing 20mhz

suggest you install inssider and see whats going on and perhaps post a screen shot of inssider

What firmware do you have installed on your N900 class router?

Can you test with an AC1200 class router or above to remove the router variable?

ASUS RT-N66R firmware 3.0.0.4.380_3831 It is the one referenced as Fuhgeddaboudit5g (and the one w/o 5g). I've also got a TP-link AC5400 sitting by my feet also shown that I haven't done anything with yet. My card is an intel ac8260 not sure why even the tp-link is not superior to the asus. My notebook is listed as 177 on the second screen shot. Thank you for the help, I appreciate it.

its pretty hard to read that but if its only -63 db signal strength and the 5 gig is only 450M wireless N no wonder you have a poor signal

think you need a new wireless AC router

I have an AC5400 I haven't set up yet. I put both laptops side by side with the current "N" router, both have the same intel 8260 card, same drivers:

Can't get past 50mbps:

Can get 130mbps:

Connection stats from router:
#8 is connecting at 130, #177 can't get past 50. Interesting observation with inssider on both, the laptop connecting at 130 sees about 5 other networks from neighbors that the one connecting at 50 isn't listing.
