Disabling a share doesn't equal to disabling Samba. Samba still runs when you plug a USB disk, it just won't share.

I have a quick question about this firmware, I got this router yesterday and decided to put your firmware on Merlin as I have used it before on different models. However for some reason the ping to the router with your firmware can be as high as 11ms and this was making me think that there was a problem with my internet connection. With the newly released Asus firmware, which is the only other firmware that I have tried I get <1ms ping.

Any reason for this?

As Merlin as stated the Asus version has two months of additional development over and above his version. If you are getting better performance with the Asus version then use it. Personally, I am staying with Merlin's version until he issues another one with the updated code.

Was merely an observation I made when trying the firmware, I don't find the new Asus firmware particularity great, the range is much worse for me that the 5ghz performance that came with the shipped firmware.

This happens in the official Asus Beta software as you would imagine but not the latest release with the iffy wifi, for me a least.

I've taken the plunge today with the latest stock, and a factory reset.

The range seems pretty much the same but I need to do some more testing.
The new wireless drivers are still WIP in my opinion. I'm still getting these in the log;

And more interestingly (as I saw with the latest Rmerlin code) , even with the 2.4Ghz radio set to 'N only' , I am now accepting connections from legacy clients (iphone3GS, PS3 etc) - which it never did with the original drivers.

I'm using the 'fixed' AIcloud for now, but as soon as Rmerlin gets time to catch up, I'll be switching back over. (I know its technically the same code, but I just feel 'safer' )

Known issue documented in numerous posts. Asus only fixed it recently, I haven't had time yet to integrate the latest code changes into my own code.

@All: when providing any kind of feedback related to wireless, always specify what router you are talking about. The wireless radio and drivers are totally different in the N66, AC66 and AC56, so if we don't know what router you are talking about, this is pretty much useless I'm afraid.

One suggestion: you can put your router model in your signature. That will make it easier for everyone trying to browse the forums looking for wifi performance feedback.

I've been running the stock .372 firmware for a few days now and I didn't notice
any increase or decrease in wireless performance with both bands on my AC66u.
I missed the Merlin version too much and I have gone back to it for now. I can wait patiently for your latest .372 build.

RT-AC56U OpenVPN client to LAN issue

Hello RMerlin, I cant thank you enough for the great work you do.

Last week I had OpenVPN (TUN,TCP) server running on the RT-AC66U router without issue thanks to your firmware. That router was purchased two weeks ago as an open box item and over the weekend it developed an internal short or the power adapter could no longer handle the current needed so I had to ship it back. This time I chose the RT-AC56U as it will be a server to multiple OpenVPN clients.

My OpenVPN client can access all IP addresses of my LAN that I have tried except actual PC's. My PC's can ping the client just fine though. I also notice that something of the DHCP does not seem the same as the AC66U was. Sometimes it will show 0 clients and just keep refreshing and other times it shows the full list of 16 but still refreshing (I realize you said this is normal in a previous post). I probably cant explain it well enough but I feel that the AC66U TCP/IP or DHCP did not act this way. Maybe the TCP/DHCP and OpenVPN issue's I am seeing on this AC56U are related?

I also have tried resetting the router on the back and holding the WiFi for a reset while booting, used ipconfig on the PC's to release and renew the IP's but the IP's did not change. Gave the PC's static IP's from the router and they changed but still no access from OpenVPN client.

Post your OpenVPN settings. I have no problem here accessing my PC through RDesktop while connected from work over OpenVPN (and I also use the RT-AC56U as my main router).

The client is is OpenVPN for Android too. Used it for original testing on the RT-AC66U so I could have it working before changing configuration on client routers.

The client access the ip and web page of other network items like my HDHomeRun and printers but just wont even ping the actual PC's even though they can ping the client.

Looks pretty much the same settings as for me, except I don't enable "Client to Client". Also, I would specify the actual algorithm used instead of leaving it on Default, just to be sure that both the client and server use the same one.

Also make sure you don't have any firewall or security suite on your PC blocking traffic from the VPN client. Some security suite might not like the traffic coming from the 10.8.0.0 subnet.

I never tested the Android client, so it could also be a problem. I only use the Win32 client from work.

10x slower would imply that a 30 ms ping time would be increased to 300ms - this is nowhere THAT bad.

Well, in my book, jumping from 2-3ms to 20-30ms... that's 10x slower

Maybe is not the best place to ask this, but here we go

I was very happy to see Asus updated wireless driver again in their 372 release, since latest beta seemed very unstable (about 2-3 resets per day on the "client" router) using media bridge mode.

But it seems that the problem persists. I have 2 RT-AC66U, one configured as router, and the other one in media bridge mode. Note that the situation is identical if i upgrade to 372 the one configured as router and leave the client on 270.26b

Tried resetting both with no luck, the log of the router that stayed active does not show any information (no unusual lines), the log of the router that resets is obviusly cleaned, so no info on this part too

Any ideas are welcome. I am afraid Asus did not test extensively their media bridge functionality (they showed a warning in beta release regarding this, but I no longer see them in 372, seems i am stuck on 270 for a while now)
