Update to 8.4 using MerlinAU and everything looks peachy (as always).

I did a dirty upgrade from 8_2 about a week ago on my 3 RT-AX88U devices and all seemed fine. I soon began to see issues with several of my IOT devices (use Smartthings for home automation). I saw some discussion on here from others having bind issues which sounded similar to my problems. What I have discovered is that as long as the binds are not changed or end point device names (or IP addresses) everything works fine. What bit me was that I added some new Matter devices and changed some device names - that just caused some cascading problems to the point where my automation scripts quit working.

Anyway, I have reverted back to 8_2 and corrected all of the bind issues (and naming problems) and all is fine. I am reluctant to go to 8_4 again but given I am not planning on anymore network changes I may go ahead.
Update - I have also noticed that under 8_4 it is possible to block internet access to individual devices BUT you cannot unblock access using the normal Network Map or AIMesh interface...

Unable to update RT-AX88U Pro, running on version 3004.388.8_2. After initiating update 3004.388.8_4, the router restarts with software 3004.388.8_2. Any ideas on how to come up with updates?

Best Regards, Marcin.

The usual suspect: when you clicked to upload the new firmware, and got to the file location, your OS pointed to the previous directory, and you ended up uploading 3004.388.8_2 again... has happened to me.

The usual suspect: when you clicked to upload the new firmware, and got to the file location, your OS pointed to the previous directory, and you ended up uploading 3004.388.8_2 again... has happened to me.
My file is called:: RT-AX88U_PRO_3004_388.8_4_nand_squashfs.pkgtb

The usual suspect is to first reboot and take out USB if any, second double check if correct file-router (pro - non pro etc.)...

The USB is in the router and there are some programs on it: FlexQoS, MerlinAU, vnStat, BACKUPMON, ntpMerlin, scMerlin, AdGuardHome, Dual Wan Failover.. I'll try to update it in the evening without the PENDRIVE.

That didn't help, without a flash drive the router also won't accept this update. Any ideas? Every previous one went through without a problem.

Usual steps if you haven't tired them already:
Try a different web browser.
Use a wired computer directly connected to the router. (Don't use WiFi and don't connect through AiMesh nodes or extenders.)
Disconnect all other LAN/WiFi devices from the router other than one wired computer used for the firmware update.
Don't use the Asus router app.
Reboot the router without the USB hard drive attached and try to update the firmware.
Disconnect the WAN and try updating the firmware.
Temporarily disable any browser addons or extensions.
Temporarily disable any third party security apps on the computer while performing the firmware update.
After firmware update leave the router alone for 5 to 10 minutes, even if it reboots leave it alone for 5 to 10 minutes.
Double check you are using the correct firmware for the router.

As a last resort one could perform a hard factory reset, then a basic initial configuration to gain access to the router GUI, then perform a firmware update. As a further last resort, flash the stock Asus firmware rather than Asus-Merlin firmware.

Any time I had this issue it was the incorrect file I was trying to upload. I guess I just wasn't verifying the correct version even though I was sure I was using it. When I finally selected the correct file it worked. Just my 2 cents.

My file is called:: RT-AX88U_PRO_3004_388.8_4_nand_squashfs.pkgtb
That is the correct file name. I had no issues on my AX88Pro.

I don't want to reset to factory settings for now. I'll wait for the next version of the software, maybe it will come.

You tried what bennor said?
And by browser, often it is enough to clear cache and delete cookies...

I'm back with an update. I managed to do the upgrade. The reason it kept pulling the old file was the SQUID server running on my local network. Once I disabled the proxy settings, the update went through without any issues, with the USB drive connected and the full package of applications that were already on the router. Everything's running smoothly! Thank you, gentlemen, for addressing the issue.

Best Regards, Marcin.

It got skipped because the 3006 firmwares were compiled at the same time, and ROG image building is disabled for 3006. Nobody reported it during the test stage, so it got skipped again during the final build run.

I'll think about it, but it's unlikely to happen since a lot of manual work would be required to do that. Unlike the regular build process, this cannot be automated and I would have to manually do it for every ROG models, plus manually publishing everything to download mirrors and the website.

Apologies, I'm new. Just wondering if there will be "rog" builds in future releases or not. And thank you for your work, much appreciated.

They should be included with the next 3004.388 release. 3006.102 releases however do not, as ROG image support was never included in the 3006 firmware releases.

Asuswrt-Merlin 3004.388.8_4 is now available for all Wifi 6 models.

Code:
3004.388.8_4 (17-Nov-2024)
  - CHANGED: VPN killswitch will now only be active if the
VPN client itself is enabled. If you stop/start
the client yourself over SSH, you need to also
             update the enabled/disabled nvram setting.
  - FIXED: Security issues in AiCloud (backports from Asus)
  - FIXED: CVE-2024-2511, CVE-2024-4741, CVE-2024-5535 &
Implicit rejection for RSA PKCS#1 in openssl
           (backport from Ubuntu by RSDNTWK)

Please keep discussions on this specific release. The thread will be locked once feedback dies down.

Downloads are here.
Changelog is here.
Shame no ROG version, I will await your next release where it will hopefully be included.

Thanks for your continued service.

Quite frankly, my RT-AX86U had been working so well for so long on 3004_388.8_0 that I really became mostly unconcerned (as in complacent) with updates. That said, noticed I was behind a few revisions, so I went ahead and performed yet another in a long history of dirty updates, the result of which was yet another stable and perfectly preforming router.

Yes, in case you were still wondering, @RMerlin is, indeed, a virtual rock star.
