Given the frequency of the disconnects you may have an intermittent fault with the usb cable/port/ssd. Have you tried usb2.0 mode?Rob90Release - Asuswrt-Merlin 3004.388.8_2 is now available
https://www.snbforums.com/threads/asuswrt-merlin-3004-388-8-is-now-available.91069/#post-918770 It seems that the LAN - OpenVPN - LAN access is perceived by the RT-AX68U_3004_388.8 firmware as a WAN, but only for the WebUI. RT-AX88U_PRO_3004_388.8 and RT-AC68U_386.14 does not have such a problem.www.snbforums.com
Is there a solution?
I have this problem occasionally. Restarting the router often helps, but not always.

I tried physically removing the flash drive from the USB. I did not try changing the USB3 mode to USB2.Given the frequency of the disconnects you may have an intermittent fault with the usb cable/port/ssd. Have you tried usb2.0 mode?
